Anxiety is the most commonly experienced mental illness in our country, and women are twice as likely to suffer from an anxiety disorder as men. The term anxiety disorder refers to prolonged or extreme fear or worry, and includes, but is not limited to: generalized anxiety disorder, panic attacks, social anxiety, and specific phobias. Anxiety is often experienced as overwhelming fear accompanied by physical symptoms such as a pounding heart, sweating, and rapid breathing. How can counseling help? Joie de Vivre utilizes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) a very common method of psychotherapy with great results to treat Anxiety Disorder. This form of therapy is geared toward helping you recognize and understand your pattern of thoughts. Cognitive behavioral therapy focuses on teaching you coping skills or mechanisms you can use to help you return to normal functioning and ease your feelings of anxiety. Integrative services such as, Biofeedback, Mindfulness and Nature Therapy are used to compliment your treatment and promote emotional regulation and a healthier lifestyle.

Anxiety looks a little different in all of us and finds its foothold based on a variety of factors: genetics, early experiences, current stressors, and social discomfort, to name a few. For some people it is utterly debilitating in one or more domains of life and for others it’s an unpleasant refrigerator hum that dampens an otherwise well-lived life. Therapy can help you both regulate the intensity of anxiety and make a pivot in how you respond to its presence, making way for less struggle and more opportunities for choosing how you want to live.

Dr. Paul Daanen

Psychologist, PsyD
Anxiety almost always lies in the aftermath of trauma. I work with people to identify and transform the thoughts and interpretations of situations that trigger anxiety and panic. Perhaps as important, my work also emphasizes the strengthening of someone's belief in themselves and their self-concept as a whole--since we cannot control the future, we must learn to be confident in our capacity to handle whatever might come.

Many of my clients grapple with the aftermath of challenging days, experiencing heightened anxiety that lingers due to minor errors. The replay of other scenarios becomes an incessant loop, persisting for days or even weeks. Your frustration intensifies as you struggle to shake off this anxiety, fostering thoughts of inadequacy and impostor syndrome. Worries about disappointing others both professionally and personally take more and more of your time each day, contributing to a perpetual state of exhaustion amid the wave of anxious thoughts. Despite attempts by friends and family to offer support, the feelings of anxiety and worry simply do not go away for long. If you aspire to regain a sense of engagement in your life, pursue excellence in your endeavors, experience love and support, and become anxiety free, these goals are well within reach. In collaboration with my clients, I help them to unravel the sources of their anxiety, instilling hope in the possibility of change. Together, we craft solutions that help manage anxiety levels, paving the way to a more serene and focused life both at work and home. I help my clients with a toolkit designed to manage anxiety, offering practical strategies to navigate through challenges and foster a sense of calm. If managing heightened anxiety while maintaining peak performance resonates with you, reach out for a complementary 15-minute consultation session. Prior to transitioning into private practice, I spent over a decade as a tenured professor in the counseling field. Throughout this time, my research focused on anxiety and stress management. I am enthusiastic about directly applying the knowledge and insights gained from this experience to help guide you toward a more fulfilling, anxiety free life.

Los Angeles, California therapist: Jayson L. Mystkowski, psychologist
Anxiety or Fears

Jayson L. Mystkowski

Psychologist, Ph.D., ABPP
While Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (CBT) is highly effective in the treatment of anxiety disorders (e.g., Panic Disorder, Social Phobia, and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder), clinicians do see some “return of fear,” or partial relapse, in some patients due to a variety of factors. Over the past two decades, treatment researchers, with whom Dr. Jayson Mystkowski had the pleasure of working with at UCLA for over 10 years, have studied “return of fear” and discovered some key variables that may optimize the effects of learning during CBT for anxiety disorders (Craske et al., 2008). First, evidence suggests that focusing on tolerating fear versus eliminating fear yields better clinical outcomes in the long term. Namely, teaching clients that fear and anxiety are normal feelings, rather than attempting to “down-regulate” such feelings all the time, is more realistic and seems to engender “hardier” clients. Second, helping clients to generate an expectancy that “scary things will not happen,” is very powerful. To do this, it is important for clinicians to create more complex exposure exercises (i.e., tasks in which a client confronts a stimulus of which they are afraid), using multiple feared stimuli instead of one at a time. Then, the lack of a feared outcome becomes particularly surprising and memorable for a client and fear reduction is more potent. Third, increasing the accessibility and retrievability of non-fear memories learned during treatment are powerful factors in mitigating against a return of fear. Craske and colleagues demonstrated that exposure to variations of a feared stimulus, using a random schedule across multiple contexts or situations, is more effective than exposure to the same stimulus, on a predictable schedule, in an unchanging environment. The former paradigm, it is argued, creates stronger non-fear memories that are easier for a client to access when subsequently confronting feared objects or situations outside of the therapy context, than the later scenario. In sum, clinicians have long been aware that some fear or anxiety returns following very successful CBT treatment. As mentioned above, there are some clear, empirically supported ways to modify the therapy we provide to further help clients generalize the gains made in therapy sessions to the real world.

Psychologist, PsyD, LP
I have been treating anxiety symptoms for many years. Therefore, it's an area in which I have particular experience. You and I will examine the component parts of your symptoms such as emotions, behaviors, and thoughts. We’ll then examine how these parts are connected and how they impact each other. I’ll help you create changes to one or more of these parts to achieve your desired symptom relief. Helping people break free from their anxiety is one of the primary reasons I became a psychologist.
