Depression

Nora Taylor, MA, RP

Registered Psychotherapist, Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology 1994
An important thing to remember when facing depression is that it is moveable, changeable. Depression, in my experience, can change with processing what has happened in your life and understanding your response to the impact it has had on your life. It often involves processing that which takes place between the trigger and then the natural response to avoid/get rid of or push away the pain. With a little help the awareness of feeling state can be understood; often it has to do with our relationships and learning how to stick up for ourselves and repair. This is where Mindfulness and Meditation comes in and also self-compassion. For more on self compassion; see Chris Germer and also Kristen Neff.

From a trauma-informed approach, depression is understood as a manifestation of unresolved trauma and a lack of feeling connected to the self and to others. The work we can do will include helping you better understand your depression, developing healthier and more helpful ways of coping, and doing the processing to resolve your trauma to relieve the depression.
