Depression

Nora Taylor, MA, RP

Registered Psychotherapist, Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology 1994
An important thing to remember when facing depression is that it is moveable, changeable. Depression, in my experience, can change with processing what has happened in your life and understanding your response to the impact it has had on your life. It often involves processing that which takes place between the trigger and then the natural response to avoid/get rid of or push away the pain. With a little help the awareness of feeling state can be understood; often it has to do with our relationships and learning how to stick up for ourselves and repair. This is where Mindfulness and Meditation comes in and also self-compassion. For more on self compassion; see Chris Germer and also Kristen Neff.

My strategy for Depression treatment is, it takes time, and sometimes it might feel overwhelming or frustratingly slow. That is normal. Recovery has ups and downs but with patience and perseverance, you can manage it controllably. Therapy for depression is long-lasting and will help you balance your debilitating emotions more healthily, reclaiming a sense of joy and fulfillment in your life.

While everyone feels down from time to time, the experience of clinical depression is something else entirely. Clinical depression can include many physical symptoms, like changes in energy, exhaustion, sleep problems, and body pains, as well as overwhelming negative thoughts that can make it difficult to think that you will ever feel better. Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, we will slowly work on identifying these negative thoughts and slowly help you start doing the things that are important to you in your life, which breaks the cycle of depression.
