Bipolar disorder is a mental illness that affects moods by experiencing periods of mania followed by depression, and intermittent periods of normalness. Mania is when the person experiences unusually high moods, leading to activities like large purchases which can lead to depression. Depression is when the person feels persistent despair over a long period.
