Anxiety is a physiological response to fear and/or uncertainty or something that has happened in the past that gets projected into the future. One of the first things I suggest to my clients to do is to slow down; pause and take a breath as the awareness of the anxiety is the first step. Emma Seppala in her TED talk provides us with a exercise in breathing which helps us to do this; she uses breathing in her work to help Vietnam Veterans s to heal from the trauma of war. Other reference for anxiety is Elisha Goldstein Ph.D. Also Elissa Epel Deep Breathing.
I work well with teens and adults who struggle with anxiety. Anxiety is a broad term and can mean many different things. We address the most difficult symptoms first. We then go a little deeper to try and undersand what's underneath the anxiety for lasting change.
Struggling with anxiety can be such an overwhelming experience that affects all other aspects of life. If we were to work together, our first goal would be to help you reduce the intensity, duration, and frequency of anxiety to a manageable level. The key to this is often the development of emotional regulation tools that you can rely on when you're in distress. If your anxiety is less intense, we can explore potential purposes of the anxiety to see how you may move forward best.
Often times, anxiety feels as though it leaves little space for us to grow; it can feel debilitating, isolating, and suffocating. My aim in healing your anxiety is by first being with you in compassion and nonjudgment- the anxiety is here for a reason, let's locate it together. In tandem, I use somatic based work to help reconnect with the body in a way that feels safe and supportive. In this work, we will be collaborative and communicative to ensure that we are doing what is best for you. Most importantly, let's help you feel connected, calm, and steady again.
Some feelings can be overwhelming, impacting your daily life, relationships, and sense of inner peace. Together, we will work to uncover the roots of your anxiety, identify triggers, and work on developing realistic coping strategies. My hope is that you can move towards a life where fear and anxiety no longer hold you back from achieving your full potential.
