Depression (also known as major depression, major depressive disorder, or clinical depression) is a common but serious mood disorder that I effectively treat through various modalities and by implementing coping strategies and motivators to improve overall mood.
I approach depression through an existential lens. We focus on your strengths and resilience. We look at what gives your life purpose and meaning. Sometimes working through depression also involves processing some past trauma.
Are you struggling with motivation, low mood, feeling tired, or not enjoying the things you used to? You may find that you're isolating yourself, or that it's been awhile since you had fun. Depression is a vicious cycle, but you don't have to deal with it alone. The therapists at Grounded Minds have years of training and experience supporting individuals with depression. Whether you're looking for compassionate support or evidence-based skills to improve your mood, we will work with you to help you feel like yourself again. Specializing in treating individuals with depression, I focus on addressing trapped anger against oneself, such as regrets, shame, and grief. Through mindfulness-based self-compassion and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, we work together to transform the narrative of your inner critic and pave the way for a brighter future.
Depression doesn't always mean tears and intense sadness. It can look like sleeping way too much, or waking up and feeling like you can't sleep at all. It can feel like just not caring about anything or not wanting to be around those you love. If this sounds like you, we can use scientifically tested techniques and a supportive place where we can chat to help you feel better.

An important thing to remember when facing depression is that it is moveable, changeable. Depression, in my experience, can change with processing what has happened in your life and understanding your response to the impact it has had on your life. It often involves processing that which takes place between the trigger and then the natural response to avoid/get rid of or push away the pain. With a little help the awareness of feeling state can be understood; often it has to do with our relationships and learning how to stick up for ourselves and repair. This is where Mindfulness and Meditation comes in and also self-compassion. For more on self compassion; see Chris Germer and also Kristen Neff.
It's normal to experience occasional feelings of sadness, but when these emotions start to disrupt our daily routines, it may indicate a more significant problem.
Major Depressive Disorder is a prevalent mental health condition that can affect individuals from all backgrounds, regardless of age or gender. The symptoms of depression can impact every aspect of one's life.
Many people struggle with depression symptoms for extended periods before seeking assistance. If you suspect that you may be experiencing depression, we encourage you to book a consultation with one of our mental health specialists who can provide effective tools to manage and overcome this condition.
Our work will be based on establishing a trusting and supportive relationship between you and I; it will include me getting to know your current and past circumstances, symptoms, medical history, your interpersonal experiences. We will want to identify and explore any underlying, perhaps previously unconscious to you factors contributing to your suffering. We will want to empower your ways of coping, which have proven helpful, as well as new more adaptive thoughts and behaviour to alleviate your symptoms and to improve your well-being.
