Trauma and PTSD

Natasha Wakefield, RP, Matatoa Counselling Services

Registered Psychotherapist, Master of Human Development Counselling
Trauma can be based on single impactful incidents, or a build up of lack of safety over time. Traumatic experiences need to be shared in a safe and supportive environment in order to decrease the brains fight or flight response. More complex trauma needs to be explored and understood using an attachment framework. Whenever possible, I prefer to work with clients suffering form trauma with one or more of their loved ones present. This allows their behaviour to be understood and responded to differently, which is much more effective and efficient than only 1 hour a week. This is optional, as the client sees fit, but is encouraged.

Do you have intrusive memories or nightmares about past traumatic incidents? Do you feel 'stuck' in these past experiences and notice that these experiences have impacted your ability to feel safe, trust others, love yourself, or feel connected to others? If you have been told by a health care professional that you may have Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or trauma-related symptoms, then you have come to the right place. I offer extensive work with PTSD and trauma using Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT). CPT is designed to help you process your trauma by helping you to feel 'unstuck'. We will discuss you trauma(s) and the thoughts and feelings you may be having about it. You will participate in a journey of analyzing these thoughts closely and allowing your therapist to help you understand your trauma in a different way. I also have experience working with first responders with PTSD - police officers, firefighters, paramedics, corrections officers and more.

Registered Psychotherapist, RP
When people hear the word 'trauma', they may envision a horrific, life altering event. Although this could very well be the case, trauma is more of an internal process that is dictated not so much by the external event, but rather by the internal response to that event. People who are impacted by trauma are often still connected to that internal reaction and taken back there when they encounter certain triggers. In working with clients who may identify as trauma or PTSD victims, I aim to find ways to process their trauma to whatever degree feels comfortable while also reeling them back into the present moment and coaching them on how to do this outside of therapy. I also aim to strengthen the neuronal pathways that let one know they are safe and that they can heal from the past. Schedule a free 15-minute consultation to ensure we are a good fit.
