I view social isolation and the societal oppression resulting from capitalism as being closely intertwined. Capitalism causes burn-out, guilt, and exhaustion. It alienates us from ourselves, from one another, and from what makes us feel creative, productive, and respected. The COVID pandemic in particular has revealed the layers of oppression and isolation that we have difficulty addressing; we have forgotten how to reach out for help, how to provide care, and how to develop a network of people that we can turn to for support and love. I believe that people are essentially good and desire community, and that the pain that comes from social isolation can be overcome by relearning skills and identifying what we need to lead a richer life. Therapy is a wonderful space to practice those skills.
