Self Esteem

Nicole Marek

Psychologist, Psychologist/Psychotherapist, OPQ
Are you hard on yourself? Do you hold yourself to higher standards than you do others? Do you have trouble asserting or even knowing your needs? Do you find yourself repeatedly abused or taken advantage of? None of this is your fault. Poor self-esteem and low self worth develop when we do not receive the love and acceptance in childhood that we need to develop it, or when we've been through too many stressful or traumatic events that break down our self-validation. But it is never too late to build a better sense of self. I use mindfulness, self-acceptance, and self-compassion exercises to teach my clients to develop worth and inner validation. If there is unresolved trauma present, I will suggest we work through that help move us forward. Everyone is deserving, and everyone is lovable. Contact me if you'd like to treat yourself better.

You won't be happy in life if you don't know, accept, and appreciate yourself. This is the foundation of all other relationships. Unfortunately, many of us weren't loved well, were not taught to love ourselves well, so we don't know how to love well. It can be learned. Heal your hurts to be able to let more pleasure and joy into your life.

Our identities are socially constructed so it is our relationship and understanding our selves. Creating spaces to highlight our preferred narratives is a wonderful opportunity to grow, heal and re-think our selves.

Self esteem refers to our sense of self; being aware of what our values are, and living accordingly. It includes acting with integrity and authenticity and taking responsibility for our lives despite what may have happened to us; if we have had difficult experiences it means being aware of the self-critical mind and replacing it with self compassion; ie being kind to yourself. You can refer to Kristen Neff’s work on self compassion or Chris Germer’s; there is also 5 minutes self compassion breaks on you tube you can refer to when things get hard; be kind, cut yourself some slack and take some chances in life; that’s important.
