Trauma can be either an accumulation of experiences or a specific traumatic event in a person's life that can make them feel stuck in that distressing experience. Traumatic events such as war, natural disasters, and violence can create long lasting effects. There can also be accumulated trauma from years of abuse, neglect, and dysfunctional relationships that can continue to affect us years after the abuse has ceased. These traumatic events can undermine our perception of ourselves and others, making it difficult to trust the world as safe and yourself as competent and worthy of love. Additionally, flashbacks can involve all five senses, and can cause anxiety, panic attacks, and a generalized stress response. However, with therapy, the journey to healing the past, understanding the present, and building a more meaningful future can begin.

Shane Smyth

Registered Psychotherapist, MA, RP, OACCPP
Creating a safe and supportive environment to begin the healing work following emotional abuse is a priority for me in my work with clients. I know first hand the impact emotional abuse has on one's ability to engage in relationships and I want to help people regain trust in themselves to identify and maintain healthy relationships with others. Working on boundaries and personal values is a key part of this process as well as exploring underlying traumas and abuses.

Emotional abuse can feel like, "it hits you from behind." Sometimes taking years to fully realize its impact. Whether from childhood or adulthood, emotional abuse can leave you struggling with self doubt, feeling flawed, incomplete, not good enough. It can cause internal conflict where you may have even lost trust in yourself. The goal becomes to heal the inner conflict by addressing the parts of you that are wounded. To create unity inside where a sense of acceptance and self compassion is restored, or created.
