An important thing to remember when facing depression is that it is moveable, changeable. Depression, in my experience, can change with processing what has happened in your life and understanding your response to the impact it has had on your life. It often involves processing that which takes place between the trigger and then the natural response to avoid/get rid of or push away the pain. With a little help the awareness of feeling state can be understood; often it has to do with our relationships and learning how to stick up for ourselves and repair. This is where Mindfulness and Meditation comes in and also self-compassion. For more on self compassion; see Chris Germer and also Kristen Neff.

Depression can feel like such an overwhelming weight, affecting most or all areas of your life. If you are experiencing depression, please know that you are not alone and that your feelings are valid. Depression is definitely not a sign of weakness, and is a complex and challenging condition that can affect anyone. Depression doesn't discriminate no matter how many people seem to "have it worse" than you. There is absolutely hope and help available! Healing takes time, but you deserve to feel better. You don't have to face this alone.

One of my favourite analogies to explain the experience of depression is that depression is like a giant Yeti sitting on top of you all day long. It makes getting up, doing daily tasks, interacting with others, and even sitting extremely hard and tiring. As such, and for many other reasons, walking the path with depression can be profoundly challenging. At the same time, some research suggests that depression has an evolutionary function, namely, to slow us down and focus all our energy on solving the complex problem that started the depressive episode. In essence, it forces us to stop and reflect. In therapy, I support clients to explore their relationship with depression, develop tools to stay regulated when it shows up, get curious if it has an important message for them, and take action towards their goals (which may include responding to depression messages). In my personal and clinical experience, I have seen that depression can be an opportunity for life reflection and profound personal growth.
