Trauma can come from a lot of things including abuse, tragedy, abandon, neglect and a lot of other things that have scarred a person throughout their lifetime. PTSD can be come from accidental deaths or military service. I have treated clients dealing with various forms of abuse, as well as military PTSD clients from WWII to Afghanistan vets.

Trauma is always with us. We re-experience traumatic events as we move from one phase of life to the next, and thus we must also re-process the trauma. Not doing so can lead to PTSD. Biologically, we are creatures that feel first, and think second. Thus, having a safe space to explore the emotional content of our trauma and validation for those feelings is an important step in moving forward.

PTSD is an extreme anxiety reaction to trauma. Sometimes it is necessary to examine the past to let go of it completely. Sometimes it is necessary to learn techniques to purge intrusive thoughts and feelings. Like all anxiety it is based largely on our thinking patterns. Knowing we can change those thoughts give power to make substantial changes.
