As a non-licensed practitioner, I cannot legally claim to work with depression (because it’s a diagnosable condition). That said, I’ve successfully helped a number of depressed clients (officially diagnosed or not) who’ve been in conventional treatment for years. I also speak from personal experience, as a guy whose family was affected by undiagnosed depression.
I believe the “chemical imbalance” model that the pharmaceutical companies use is simplistic. It reflects our society’s love of easy answers, how little therapy insurance companies want to pay for, and the over-specialization of health care, which results in practitioners who don’t understand how mind, body, and spirit fit together.
A holistic long-term solution can be as simple as diet, herbs, and supplements (some as effective as prescriptions, without the side-effects). Or it might include coaching to develop healthy relationships and solve problems that are getting you down, improving self-esteem, learning healthy habits and positive coping mechanisms, and healing and energy treatments to change the negative messages you’ve absorbed through life.
