Since the pandemic shook our world and the experience of how we connect with others, I have been practicing remotely. I have found that teletherapy has been as effective as meeting in person in terms of relationship building, creating a safe space, and communicating openly, honestly, and directly. For many clients with busy lives, online therapy reduces the obstacles of travel, traffic, and parking, and provides a simple way of managing billing/payment.

UCEBT clinicians provide quality mental health care to our clients both in-person and by using Telehealth sessions. The technology we use is HIPAA compliant to protect client’s privacy with options for sharing materials and sending secure messages. There is no special cameras or devices needed, simply having a smartphone or a computer with a camera allows clients access to their clinician.  Telepsychology interventions have been well studied and research supports its ability to improve access to treatment without compromising effectiveness.

With technology, you can experience all the benefits of in-person therapy on secure, easy-to-use, high-quality internet platforms. Online sessions allow you to do therapy in the comfort of your own home or allow you flexibility in environments that best suit you. It can be especially helpful to those who find it challenging to travel to an office for appointments due to location, work, children at home, lifestyle, or other practical or personal reasons. While there are multiple ways that counseling can take place online, I work primarily with face-to-face video conferencing via Zoom and, on occasion, telephone sessions. I always hold my sessions in a quiet and confidential space, giving you the same confidentiality & professionalism that you experience within an office setting. Most, if not all, of my clients, find virtual sessions to be highly effective and convenient. They allow for the comfort and safety of therapy in your own space, and no travel time is often less vulnerable than needing to go to an office. Research of multiple studies finds that online therapy is equally effective as in-person for most cases. That being said I always advocate for what works best for each individual and it is wonderful to have choices to find your best path whichever that may be. If you are not super-computer savvy or are anxious about how to use technology, I will work to make it as seamless as possible. I have chosen a platform that is easy to use and I am happy to assist you with any questions or concerns. A common concern I hear from clients regarding online therapy is finding a quiet and/or confidential space when you’re homebound with children and/or family members or roommates. Be sure and scope this out in advance so you are guaranteed quiet and privacy during your session. Since it is so convenient many times people forget to allow themselves a few minutes to "switch hats" and allow themselves a few breaths and get settled into being present and in the head/body space for your session. Headphones or Airpods can often make audio clearer or ensure more privacy but are not necessary. Given that video sessions can be conducted on your smartphone, clients have found it helpful to go to a park, sit in their car in the driveway, and/or walk around your neighborhood. Get creative and support yourself. Find a private space that allows you to receive support no matter where you are. You are welcome to have pets join your space if you find that comforting, and supporting, and you may see my fellow feline/canine therapists join in one of our sessions on my end.

Washington, District of Columbia therapist: Dr. Wayne Bullock, psychologist
Feminist

Dr. Wayne Bullock

Psychologist, PsyD, MEd
Life is filled with challenges. We all approach these challenges in characteristic ways that are shaped by the life we have lived up until that moment. We learn how to respond to challenges based on what has been helpful in the past. As we grow and move through life, these ways of coping can become less advantageous. Sometimes we get stuck in our responses to stress, and this can exacerbate negative feelings. I can help you learn to notice these patterns, the ways they have helped, and the ways in which they no longer serve you. Together, we will work to create more options for you to respond to the challenges of life.

Counseling sessions in-person are generally considered the most helpful. For clients who are unable to drive, are ill or disabled, or don't have childcare, video or phone sessions with a counselor can be just what's needed. Depending on clients' counseling needs, therapists may require one or all of your sessions be conducted in-office.

Online therapy is such a wonderful opportunity to do deep and powerful therapeutic work in a way that is both convenient and secure. I want all my clients, online and in person, to feel the same warmth and compassion as we work through situations and experiences. In much of the same way that we do in person, my online work is based around building a supportive therapeutic relationship. In therapy, potential for healing and growth occurs through through the relationship that we build together. I really enjoy working with clients who are trying to figure out how to manage or explore the difficult feelings – sometimes anxiety and depression - that can emerge during self-exploration, identity development, life changes, working on relationship issues among monogamous and poly/ENM/CNM people, career or work shifts, LGBTQIA+ clients, and so much more. Work with me often involves exploring patterns, looking at the imprints of families of origin, and addressing ways in which those long past experiences come up in the present.
