How Counseling Can Help Your Child With Depression

Working with a child counselor can give your child tools to address common depression symptoms, develop healthy coping skills, and learn how to become their own advocate.

Common Signs Of Depression In Kids:

  • Low energy.
  • A decline in academic performance.
  • Not wanting to socialize.
  • Negative or bad thoughts.
  • Suicidal ideations.
  • Struggling to share thoughts and feelings.
  • Anger outburst.
  • Oppositional behavior.
  • Low interest in activities.

How To Look Out For Depression In Your Child

One way to identify depression in your child is to keep an eye on their food intake and sleep pattern. Nutrition and sleep are often the first areas of functioning that impact kids when it comes to depression.

I’ll share a case study with you as an example:

“Jason started therapy during the same week that he started 4th grade. During the intake session, his parents shared that they recently moved and have noticed a few changes in Jason. As the counselor, I asked what type of changes. The parents expressed that prior to the move and change in school, Jason was outgoing, played Halo online with friends, enjoyed snacking, and had pretty normal eating and sleep routine. Jason told the counselor that he agreed with his parents. During the one-on-one time with Jason, I asked him, about his sleep and food intake. Jason mentioned that he feels he is eating more and has a hard time getting out of bed.”

In the case example above, you are able to understand that Jason is struggling with the move. The struggle is seen in the symptoms shared by his parents and Jason.

If you feel that your child is struggling with depression, try to explore the current and past eating and sleep pattern. Changes in these areas often connect to your child’s mood and mental health status.
