So many teenagers are struggling with mental health these days, what can the rest of the family do to not only support the teen but keep themselves moving forward? My goal is a whole family that reflects the values and goals of every member. I work a lot with families who have kids who have multiples challenges, have experienced trauma, who may be immersed in school refusal, and/or may be considered for a residential placement.

My goal for every family is to learn how to connect, support, and accept one another. While I frequently meet families when they are in the midst of a crisis, I find it is important to remind the family that they are not defined by that crisis. Safety is always paramount, and a safety plan is an important step in the therapeutic process, but a healthy family is more than safety. I help a family define what their values are, and what family dynamics have gotten in the way of reflecting those values. I support children in sharing their inner thoughts with their caregivers and help caregivers sit with any uncomfortable feelings that may arise when that happens. I also provide separate coaching to caregivers if they are in need of a separate space to work out their own emotions without judgment from others.
