Trauma and PTSD

Elizabeth Tener

Licensed Clinical Social Worker, LICSW
PTSD, trauma, and dissociative defenses are the result of abuse or shocking events. Vulnerable parts of us still carry that terror despite the fact that the abusive situations may be far in the past. Using IFS I can access those hurting parts with minimum pain and bring them compassion, curiosity, appreciation and eventually the freedom of transformation.

Counselor/Therapist, MA LPC, Certified Equine Assisted Therapist, Art Therapist, CSAT/CPTT
Horses are well-suited for the therapy environment because of their natural instincts and communication methods. While humans can speak, explain, and rationalize thoughts, horses live in an entirely action-based social structure. This works well in therapy because in action-based exercises you must change your actions to change your results—horses don’t question your motives, they react to the actions you take. Their hyper-vigilance and heavy reliance on body language is also a large part of the counseling process. Horses are significantly more aware of body language than humans and more readily recognize and react to levels of anger, anxiety, fear, or sadness that are imperceptible to humans. This provides real-time feedback for the participant and the therapist. There is no magic or mystery as to the use of horses in therapy. They’re therapy partners that simply have the natural perception, response, and inclination to allow participants to try new communication strategies.

Joy Mental Health and Psychiatry

Psychiatric Nurse/Therapist, board-certified APRN, PMHNP-BC
Trauma and PTSD Treatment: Medication Management and Psychiatric Evaluation Trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) are often treated with a combination of psychotherapy and medication management, guided by a thorough psychiatric evaluation. Psychiatric Evaluation: This initial step involves a detailed discussion of the traumatic experience, current symptoms (flashbacks, nightmares, anxiety, etc.), and overall mental health. The psychiatrist assesses if the symptoms meet the criteria for PTSD and explores any potential co-occurring conditions like depression or anxiety. Medication Management: Medications are not a cure for PTSD but can effectively manage symptoms, allowing individuals to better engage in therapy. Common medications used include: Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs): Can help regulate mood, reduce anxiety, and improve sleep, all of which are often disrupted by PTSD. (e.g., sertraline, paroxetine) Alpha-adrenergic blockers (Prazosin): May help reduce nightmares, a common symptom of PTSD. Important Considerations: Medications are typically used alongside trauma-focused therapy, considered the first-line treatment for PTSD. Examples include Prolonged Exposure (PE), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Finding the right medication may involve some trial and error, as individual responses can vary. Medication management is an ongoing process with regular monitoring by the psychiatrist to assess effectiveness and adjust dosages as needed. Overall, a combined approach of medication management and psychotherapy, guided by a thorough psychiatric evaluation, offers the most effective treatment for trauma and PTSD.
