I am a mature-aged Cisgender Gay Male Psychologist, Counsellor and Clinical Hypnotherapist, who came to psychology as a mature-aged student (studying mainly part time) after working in a variety of blue and white-collar jobs.
I find it interesting to investigate (therapeutically) how an individual (or couple) came to be where they are at this time of life. I refer to it as my "benevolent curiosity" which I use to seek to assist clients who come to see me (in person or online).
My belief is that for some clients they like the idea of working with a Gay man who is also a psychologist, and therefore (potentially) has first-hand knowledge and experience with some of the issues that an LGBTI person may experience. (i.e. the client is unlikely to need to "educate" me on aspects of LGBTI life.)
I also like the thought of being able to assist other LGBTI people feel more comfortable with where they are in life, by making use of my over half a century's life experience, decades of volunteer experience, all combined with my tertiary training.

Clients come to see me (both during normal office hours, as well as "Out of Hours") in relation to a number of presenting issues.
In addition to Gay Lesbian and Bisexual issues (discrimination, issues around self-esteem, less than equal treatment, amongst others) I also deal with depression, anxiety, stress, difficult workplace experiences, relationship issues, self esteem, and grief among other concerns.
Basically, I deal with most issues that "come through the doors". Although there are some matters, I don't deal with, they are listed on my main website.
Some clients like the idea that (combined with my psychology, counselling and clinical hypnotherapy training and experience) I have a combination of life experience (being a "baby boomer") as well as workplace experience in both blue-collar and office (or white-collar) jobs.
Also in the psychology setting, I have co-facilitated a Domestic Violence group (for mandated participants) as well as co-facilitating a drug and alcohol program in a prison farm setting. In addition, I got flown to a FIFO mine-site, some years ago, to see how staff were coping after an accidental death on-site.
While LGB clients are a significant but not a major area of my client base, it is an area of practice that I have experience in, (what I see as an area of expertise for me) as well as an area I would like to expand on.
So overall a combination of life experience, (including as a gay man) tertiary training in psychology, counselling, as well as training in Clinical Hypnotherapy, in a setting where telehealth and after-hours consultations are available. Along with Medicare rebates, (with a GP referral).
