If you are anxious and/or burnt out and are looking to go beyond fixing a problem or feeling better, I may be the psychologist for you. Think of me as a mental health personal trainer. I can provide some initial relief but also help you get a deeper understanding of yourself. I use a mix of mindfulness based coping skills and provide a form of cognitive behavioral therapy called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Along with some other approaches, we can work together to help you sustain long-term mental health improvement. I specialize in working with people who identify as perfectionists, high-achievers and people pleasers. I don't accept insurance but superbills can provided for potential OON reimbursement upon request.

Treatment Approach
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
- Interpersonal
- Psychodynamic
Approach Description: I approach therapy by first getting to know you and what is bringing you to therapy before we discuss any coping skills. I ask questions to help me understand your concerns and I will gather some info about your family and other life experiences (that's the psychodynamic part). Think about the beginning like we are laying all the puzzle pieces out on a table. I ask thought provoking questions to try to put some of the puzzle pieces together. I try to help you think about things in a new way. New perspectives usually provide some quick relief, but I don't stop there.
Overtime I will help you learn new ways to approach anxiety, this is where ACT comes in. First you will learn how to deal with anxiety (and other tough emotions) and accomplish your goals even if you feel anxious. This also includes mindfulness training because that helps increase emotional intelligence and helps you tolerate difficult emotions. We will also identify your values, what is meaningful to you in life and what is important to you. I teach you to purse goals that are aligned with those values and to live life with anxiety rather than waiting until the anxiety goes away. It is helpful to identify what is important to think more big picture to power through the days that are toughest. A deeper, more accurate understanding of yourself boosts confidence and improves overall mental well being.
ACT is a form of CBT so there is some structure to it but I integrate psychodynamic and interpersonal approaches so it is more qualitative. Working with me will include a lot of reflection, critical thinking and analyzing experiences rather than homework and skill building. I also like to laugh and try to make my clients feel at ease even when we are dealing with tough stuff.

Big Picture Psychological Services is a therapy practice that provides therapy and evaluations. I'm Dr. Hover and I am the only provider.
As the name suggests, thinking bigger picture is an important part of my practice. I don't just approach therapy with a fix-it mentality. Think of me instead like a mental health personal trainer. I specialize in long-term, continuous mental health improvement. I will help you address your initial concerns like alleviate some anxiety with work for example. But then we will go beyond that and work together to help you better understand yourself and proactively manage your mental health. Therapy is hard work and will feel uncomfortable at times, but the long term benefits make the discomfort worth it.
Who do I work with?
Most of my clients identify as over-thinkers, perfectionists, people pleasers and/or high achievers. These traits can be a recipe for burnout. They usually wait until things feel pretty awful before they give themselves permission to focus on themselves or ask for help. They wait this long because they often prioritize other people or things like work or school more than they do themselves. Sometimes they can feel embarrassed to admit anxiety is a problem because they have generally been pretty successful and feel like they are complaining. Or anxiety has low-key been kind of helpful and it is hard to think about life without anxiety. But eventually the anxiety becomes overwhelming and it's time to figure this all out.
Many of my clients have been in therapy before but some it is their first time, they are just interested in going deeper right away. Overthinking becomes an asset because I encourage clients to think about what we talk about in session during the week. My approach is most helpful to those that are willing to reflect on their experiences between sessions. I encourage weekly therapy at least at first for better results. Many of my clients work in healthcare or in corporate management, but entrepreneurs and medical students often find working with me helpful. Read on to learn more about how I approach therapy.
