Psychotherapy is most effective when two people (therapist and client) work together to develop a type of therapeutic relationship that not only seeks to make sense of unfolding dynamics but also provides a safe place from which to explore both the known and unknown. In other words, psychotherapy or counseling should offer a meaningful experience, offering new ways of being, relating, and experiencing. Lasting change becomes possible when we are able to find and apply new ways of thinking and feeling about ourselves and others - new ways of relating or responding to the world in which we live and engage.

Approach Description: I practice from a relational perspective, based on contemporary psychoanalytic theory, research, and technique. Offering something more than quick fixes and manualized care is important to me and my approach to psychotherapy. If you are looking for something different, something based on appreciating and developing the depth of your experience (both internally and interpersonally), feel free to contact me to further discuss my approach to psychotherapy. Additionally, please visit my website (pouliotpsychologicalservices.com) for more information, and in particular, feel free to read the section entitled, "What is Psychotherapy," a post in which I describe and define the process of therapy from my perspective. If you are interested in my approach to working specifically with trauma and trauma-related conditions, feel free to view the Trauma Blog for various writings on the subject and its treatment. Psychotherapy, especially when working with trauma, should work to establish and maintain a safe place and space on which dynamics inherent to the process of therapy can play out and be understood as safely as possible. In my experience, psychotherapy or trauma therapy works best as a co-created and co-negotiated process between therapist and client, working together to make sense of meaningful interactions and experiences as they relate to the client's symptoms and struggles. From my perspective, as a trauma therapist, it is of the upmost importance to conduct psychotherapy at a manageable pace that engenders and promotes safety, trust, healing, and growth. This kind of therapeutic relationship holds potential to not only manage, organize, and process distressing experiences in meaningful ways (a type of relational pain management of sorts) but it also holds potential to become a powerful mechanism for lasting change via the emergence of new ways of relating to oneself and others. If you are looking for a more in-depth and holistic way to understand and treat your symptoms and difficulties, feel free to give me a call to discuss how my approach might work for you.
