How to Prepare for Your First Counselling Session

Taking the step to start counselling is an act of courage and self-care.
Believe it or not, as a counsellor myself, I still find the drive to my own counselling sessions daunting; wondering what I’ll talk about, if it’s “worthy” of counselling, and letting my mind race with doubts. But once I’m in that safe space, everything flows naturally! It’s completely normal to feel this way, and this guide will help you understand what to expect, how to prepare, and how counselling can help address the challenges you’re facing.

What to Expect in Your First Session
Your first session is about building trust and getting to know one another. It’s a chance for me to understand what’s brought you to counselling and for you to share at your own pace. I’ll also explain how the process works, address any questions, and together we’ll start to explore your goals. Think of it as the foundation for the journey we’ll take together.

Setting Your Goals
Before the session, it can be helpful to consider what you’d like to achieve. Are you struggling with a specific issue, like grief, anxiety, or relationship concerns? Or perhaps you’re feeling stuck and looking for clarity and direction. No matter where you’re starting from, we’ll work together to identify goals that feel meaningful to you.

Preparing for Your Session
If your session is online, choose a quiet, private space where you feel comfortable and can speak freely. For in-person sessions, arrive a few minutes early to settle in. You don’t need to bring anything except yourself, but if you have questions or thoughts, feel free to jot them down beforehand.

How Counselling Can Help
Counselling is a space to unpack your story, explore patterns, and create new insights. Using approaches like CBT and narrative therapy, we’ll focus on building clarity and confidence.

What to Expect Moving Forward
As we continue, we’ll uncover your strengths, develop strategies, and take meaningful steps toward the changes you want to see. My goal is to create a space where you feel heard, supported, and empowered.

Closing Thoughts
Choosing to begin counselling shows strength and a commitment to personal growth. Whether you’re seeking clarity, relief, or personal development, I’m here to walk alongside you. If you’re ready to begin, send a message or schedule your first session today—I would be honoured to support you on this journey.
