Here at Denver Wellness Counseling, our therapists prioritize both the importance of the therapeutic relationship and the need for research-backed interventions so clients can finally make the gains they are hoping for. Many of our clients find us after years of "talk therapy" and a readiness to do "deeper work." We are happy to help and know how to guide that process.
Our therapists specialize in EMDR therapy, which they thoughtfully combine with other modalities to meet the unique needs of their clients. Therapy can look a number of ways, but will typically include tools for building self-awareness, cultivating internal sources of strength, healing old wounds (EMDR), and integrating treatment gains into present day systems and relationships.
Yes, we consider ourselves "trauma" therapists, yet we purposely expand the trauma definition to include ANY life event that has shifted one's sense of safety, choice (control), or identity. We work to help clients heal wounding from any developmental stage of life, even those that occurred prior to explicit memory (pre-verbal experiences), or recent events from the past few weeks or months.

Approach Description: Here at Denver Wellness Counseling we have a 3 Pillar approach to healing where we work with clients on the following:
1. Stabilization of present-day stressors; 2. Healing old emotional/relational wounds; and 3. Building secure attachment to self and others.
This three prong approach allows for us to consider and treat the ways that symptoms typically show themselves, through activated present day triggers, re-experiencing of the past (events, cognitions, emotions, behaviors), and relationships to others and to ourself (self-esteem).
To help clients stabilize and manage present day stressors, we consider tools for grounding, coping, tolerating distress, and rewiring the brain to focus on more adaptive themes and messages.
To help clients heal old wounds, we consider techniques (such as EMDR) for the reprocessing of stuck, invasive, traumatic memories. These unprocessed trauma memories are held in isolation in the brain, where their components (thoughts, feelings, action urges) can hijack our present day experience and reactions.
To help clients build a more secure attachment to self and others, we consider one's early caregiving or life experiences and ask "what may you have needed that you didn't receive." We use imagery or resourcing to download and strengthen messages of self-worth and relational safety, such as "I matter" or "I can take up space" or "I'm deserving of love." Then, we integrate both treatment gains and upgraded messages of worth to present day behaviors and relationships (boundaries, self-care, self-parenting, conflict resolution, advocacy, etc).
