Finances

Fees
  • Affordable sliding scale therapy: apply if you may be eligible.
  • I became a therapist because I truly wanted to help people and make a difference. Honestly, I believe I am worth my regular fee, but understand that that doesn't mean everyone can afford it. Of course, please keep in mind that a sliding scale isn't about what you want to pay, but what you can afford to pay. Having said that, I will do my best to work with you to stretch to "meet you in the middle" so that you can get the support and help you need.
Insurance
  • Out of Network
  • Although I do not accept insurance directly, many of my clients receive some reimbursement through their policies. I would be considered an "outside provider." You will want to check your policy for details.

Gregg Unterberger Practice Description
If you are reading this, you probably want relief and you want it now, not yesterday. Therapy isn't usually a quick fix, but I don't think it has to take forever, either. We will work in the first few sessions to get to know each other and take some immediate steps to point you toward a better life, day-to-day, while simultaneously starting to look at the deeper issues that drive your symptoms. My approach to therapy is to offer a variety of different therapeutic modalities to bring healing as quickly as possible: I have a lot of power tools in my toolbox, if you will. I find that my client's traumas are often at the heart of many of their problems. I am trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) an evidence-based, "industrial-strength" trauma treatment used by the Veteran's Administration hospitals for PTSD. With nearly two decades of experience with EMDR, I can attest that it can often begin to resolve prior traumatic events like physical and sexual abuse, auto collisions and life-threatening events, in sessions, not years. Brainspotting, the #1 rated cutting-edge trauma therapy for adults after the Sandy Hook Massacre, can be useful towards working through painful, horrific memories, as well as reducing anxiety and depression. Dr. David Grand, the creator of the technique (whom I trained under directly) also uses it to enhance peak performance in sports and dramatic arts. Sometimes hypnosis can be useful to "go back" to an earlier time and release the unexpressed pain somehow stored in the unconscious and better remember and understand what happened. Many of my clients tell me that their prior therapists were aloof or cerebral. I am not sure how that would be of benefit. Your feelings, your emotions are important to me and knowing you are heard and understood is vital to your healing. I do my work with both my heart and my head and that seems to make a real difference. Human connection between the therapist and client is vital and I must earn it from my clients. This connection alone isn't everything, but it is where all healing begins. I am also a big believer in humor and a common sense, pragmatic approach to therapy. We could all use a laugh now and then and learn to not take life quite so seriously sometimes. And, even though I have served as Adjunct Faculty at Texas State University, I really try to skip the psychobabble with my clients. You don't want a bunch of theory, you just want to feel better. For those who are open to the concept of a Higher Power, it can be important to include these beliefs into our work. Atheists and agnostics, too, often have a moral or philosophical code they live by. My job is to help you explore and understand your beliefs and find ways to integrate them into your healing. But it is never my job to dictate these beliefs, regardless of what I believe. Over the years, I have worked successfully with individuals from a variety of religious and non-religious backgrounds including Buddhists, Hindus, Evangelical Christians, Atheists, Agnostics, Mystics, New-Agers and Pagans. Many of my clients say they are "spiritual, but not religious," and I understand and honor this position as well. I offer my new clients a "risk-free" initial appointment. Research demonstrates that the very best predictor of whether therapy will be successful is whether the client feels a "click" or connection to the therapist. Come see me for your initial session and if you don't feel I am right for you, we will shake hands and part friends -- with no charge. I appreciate your willingness to consider me as your therapist. Regardless of whom you choose, may I laude you for taking this important step toward your healing and a new and better life. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
