People often wonder, what can therapy bring to my life that talking with a friend or loved one cannot? While therapists bring specific training and knowledge to the work, a more simple factor of therapy cannot be overlooked. Namely, the therapeutic relationship, which is unlike any other in most peoples lives.
It’s truly a place free of judgement, or fear that what is talked about could cause further issues. While friends/loved ones often have our best interest at heart, they can’t help but be effected by whats going on with us, so while they may try to be objective, it is often not possible.
Therapy provides freedom from judgement, retaliation, worsening concerns, or even just knowing a person you’re trying to have dinner with knows too much about your pain. Our therapeutic relationship would be unique in that I care about what happens to you, while not allowing it to change how I interact with you. I find it important to be more than just a kind ear. You can expect me to actively listen, as well as ask questions, give reflections, guide you as you process experiences and emotions, offer feedback when desired, and work in collaboration with you. In short, I am an active participate that allows you all the space and time you need to be heard and seen.
