London, ON N5X 3W4

I am a Registered Social Worker with over forty years of experience working mostly in hospital based Mental Health facilitating individuals, couples and families to achieve well-being and their personal best I am trained in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT), informed Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) and I am also well experienced in facilitating group therapy. I was a member of the teams that developed and implemented the Adult Anxiety and Affective Disorders Program and the Child and Adolescent Day Treatment Program specializing in the treatment of anxiety, depression and psychosis at London Health Sciences Center. In addition to working at London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC), Madame Vanier Children Services in London Ontario and McDonald House Community Out-patient Psychiatry General Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie Ontario, with both adult and adolescent populations, I maintained a private practice since 1990. Since retiring from LHSC in 2016, my private practice has thrived and is now full time. At times life is a balancing act, and sometimes we need a little guidance and support to maintain that balance. An experienced therapist can help us move through difficult times, better understand our families/relationships, and find our inner sense of peace, well being and wisdom. Having a neutral, non-judgmental place to share difficulties, receive validation and support can be very beneficial. Collaboration to reach your goal is an essential element of our work together. The client brings open communication, a desire for change and I will listen unconditionally and without judgment. We will work together to help you hear your inner voice and nurture your resilience. Sessions are confidential and provide a safe and relaxed environment with your best interests as a priority. My counselling approach begins with a thorough assessment. This will include gathering information about social supports, daily routines and self care. Once problems are clarified, a detailed plan for counselling is made. Family or close supports are welcome to join sessions as desired. Please note that all counselling sessions will include confidential discussions and note-taking. At the initial session we will discuss consent to services, protection of your personal information and exceptions to confidentiality.

Mary B Rodenhurst Practice Description
Therapists use a range of techniques and methods, some suited to particular areas of expertise, and some can be applied to clients dealing with a variety of issues in their everyday life. Therapy helps to increase a person’s well-being and to provide a safe, supportive environment to heal and to grow. The key to successful therapy is a connected, trusting relationship between you and your therapist. Therapy at times is the combination of a variety of techniques to match the style and specific needs of clients. Some methods that I draw from in providing treatment are: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) CBT is an evidenced based psychological treatment for individuals living with a multitude of mental and physical challenges including anxiety, depression, workplace burnout, trauma, family/relationship difficulties, pain management, loss and grief. Through continued practice, you can learn to prevent relapse into those difficult, anxious and/or depressive periods in your life. CBT focuses on the role of thinking in how we feel and what we do. The approach assists clients in challenging and reframing their beliefs and thoughts, challenges and reframes beliefs and thoughts to transform behaviour and emotions. Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) IPT is an evidence-based attachment-focused psychological treatment suited to adolescents and adults that focuses on such issues as Role Transition, Grief/Loss, Disputes and Social Skills. The aims of IPT are to reduce difficult emotions, to resolve interpersonal problems, symptomatic recovery and to help individuals to have greater social functioning and supports. It is based on the principle that relationships and life events impact mood and that the reverse is also true in that mood impacts life events and relationships. Motivational Interviewing (MI) MI focuses on using directive, client-centered approach to elicit behaviour change by helping clients to explore and resolve ambivalence. Compared with non-directive counselling, it is more focused and goal-directed in influencing clients to consider making change. The examination and resolution of ambivalence about making change is a central purpose or goal. MI is a collaborative conversation to strengthen a person’s own motivation for and commitment to change. Supportive Counselling Sometimes having a neutral place to share one’s difficulties and receive support is helpful. Supportive counselling can include problem-solving and helpful resources. Supportive counselling can be combined with other methods of treatment such as cognitive behaviour therapy, and interpersonal psychotherapy Whether you are an individual or a couple struggling with a past or present relationship, dealing with a recent loss, grief or life transition, a parent worried about your child or children, or if you feel like you could use some stress management or support, I am available to help.
