My name is Richard Cox, and I welcome you to my psychotherapy practice. I specialize in three areas. The first two are part of marriage and family therapy, and they are couples counseling, and parent-child counseling. The third area is a focus on Bipolar Disorders, which I have been keenly interested in understanding and helping clients with since very early in my career in psychotherapy. My education includes a masters degree, M.A., in mental health counseling, and a doctoral degree, Ph.D., in counseling with a focus on marriage and family therapy. I encourage you to schedule an appointment with me, as I look forward to meeting you and hearing your story.

Treatment Approach
- Emotionally Focused (EFT)
- Existential/Humanistic
- Family Systems
- Gottman Method
- Internal Family Systems
- Object Relations
- Person-Centered
- Psychodynamic
Approach Description: My approach is to get to know the client(s), because only then will I know how to help him, her, or them. Because I work with both individuals and families (for what I do, family therapy can be either a couple or parent(s) and child/children), my approach can go in two different directions. With individuals I focus on the client's major concern and my initial approach tends to be person-centered, humanistic, and perhaps existential. Then we will utilize whatever approach is most relevant: object relations, internal family systems, psychodynamic, and/or CBT. With families (couples or parent-child) my approach will initially include both EFT and Gottman method if the client is a couple. If I am working with a family or a parent-child, I start with structural family therapy, and we may also use dyadic developmental psychotherapy and/or parent management training if the clients are a parent-child relationship. My overarching approach is to get to know the client or clients, and build a good working relationship with them, her, or him.

Finances
Fees
- Average Session Fee $125-$150
- Affordable sliding scale therapy: apply if you may be eligible.
- I believe in doing some counseling on a pro bono basis. However, I have also come to the conclusion, and research tends to bear this out, that when treatment is free, it is taken less seriously and suffers a devaluation. Therefore, I generally will charge a very small fee, something in the range of $10-$25 for clients whose income is marginal.

- Online Therapy Details: Currently I am using teletherapy.io as the venue for online or remote psychotherapy.
My practice is strictly online counseling or remote therapy. In January 2024 I moved from St. George, Utah to Arizona so that I might be closer to family. That left me with the option of working with clients in Utah using teletherapy. It is a great opportunity to work with individuals, couples, and families who, for whatever reason, find it difficult to meet in the therapist's office. Two common difficulties in going to a therapist's office are the client's anxiety and/or depressed mood. The pandemic that started in early 2020 has done a lot to increase our anxiety and feed the individual's depression, and the need for teletherapy became quite real and dramatic. I have had a lot of experience helping people deal with their anxieties, their depressed mood, and family issues, including anger management. I believe there are some great therapy models geared for mental and emotional health concerns. Nevertheless, every individual is unique and often has unique needs. My responsibility as your therapist is to help you find the best mental health tools for managing your concerns and healing.
