Sara Johnson-Cardona (She/Her)

Licensed Clinical Social Worker, LCSW
 therapist: Sara Johnson-Cardona,
Online in Missouri (Online Only)
Hi! I am a Certified Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapist and am also trained in EMDR and Sensorimotor psychotherapy (L1). My highest value when it comes to providing therapy is you deserve the absolute best quality, and I am dedicated to my own training and consultation in order to provide you with the care you deserve. I am passionate about guiding people towards their own healing, and believe in each individual's capacity to live a life that is most true to themselves and that feels peaceful and balanced. I understand that may sound impossible right now, and all you need to start is the tinest hope that a different way of living and that healing could be possible. People sometimes ask how I can do this job, and repeatedly hear the darkest moments of people's lives, and my answer is simple, I get to see people heal every single day. Being a witness to that is sacred to me and is a tremendous honor. I cannot wait to support you. I have found (and research supports) that online therapy is extremely convenient and effective way of providing therapy, and can actually be less intimidating for many.

Treatment Approach

  • EMDR
  • Internal Family Systems
  • Somatic
Approach Description: I want to therapy to be a place where you feel you can truly be all of who you are and that everything you bring will be held with compassion, curiosity, and non-judgement. I am guided by the Internal Family Systems therapy modality tenants, that every part of who we are makes sense, is there for a reason, none of it is bad (even the parts that other parts of us are convinced are horrible, maybe even unspeakable), and that you have what you need inside to heal you just may not have access to that yet, and through therapy you will find that resource inside of yourself. I also deeply get that this whole therapy thing can feel extremely intimidating at first, that you might have parts that do not want to do therapy or talk about certain things, and I hold that with deep respect. We will not go anywhere until all of you is ready to, and we will not make any changes unless all of you is ready. You are welcome and invited to be exactly where you are at all times, and not expected to be anywhere different than where you are, ever.

Sara Johnson-Cardona Practice Description
Let's see if any of these things describe you: You feel that there is something wrong with you, and that if anyone gets close enough they might found out. You try so very hard to be good that you spend all of your energy doing for others and are much to exhausted to do anything for yourself. You are chasing achievement to finally reach a place where you feel you have arrived and are good enough, but it doesn't seem to come (at least not for long). You have a voice inside of you that criticizes you for every little mistake. You are also really good at hiding all of this, and the people in you life may not actually have a clue how hard it all is for you. You are everyone else's rock, and you are not too sure where your rock is. You are trying so hard to do the "right" thing that you can't seem to present for any of the things you are actually doing. You have a fear that you do not belong, and maybe even that you will be abandoned and that you are unlovable. You find ways to cope, and sometimes those feel helpful, and sometimes they feel really unhelpful and then you criticize yourself incessantly, and the cycle begins again. Sometimes, you really aren't sure how to keep this up, but you also aren't so sure it could ever get any better. And you are rather scared to start, because if feels like if you open up any of what hurts inside maybe the sadness will take over and then you aren't sure what you will do. If any of that sounds familiar, let me just tell you that you are not alone. You believe those things about yourself, you have those fears, and behavioral patterns for good reasons. The truth is that without these ways of coping and these beliefs it would have been hard to get here until this exact moment. There likely was not another way before, and the good news (great news actually) is that now as an adult something else is possible. It would be an honor to get to work with you so you could find balance in your life, belief in yourself no matter what, and an ability to trust all of who you are. I know that as we work together you will gain the capacity to be the adult that you always needed, and to give yourself what has always been missing on the outside. Once you have this, no matter what life brings, you will have confidence in your ability to be with yourself through it all. Of course, you will remain human, you will make mistakes (we all do), you will still have all of the range of emotions that humans are meant to have, and the intensity of it all will be less because you will know you have a resource inside of you to meet all of your pain and your joy. I have spent my career treating trauma, with a particular passion for healing what happened to us when we were kids. I deeply believe that each person's healing contributes to all of our healing, we break cycles of trauma, and we contribute to healthier generations to come. This passion has lead me to be trained in the most effective ways to help humans heal from the difficult things that happened to them so they can feel how they were meant to and would have if their needs had been met. Together, we will make a great team -- you are the expert on you, and I have the training and experience to provide options and guidance as you move towards healing past wounds and stepping into the life you want now.
