When people hear "trauma" or "PTSD," they often think of major events like natural disasters or wars. However, symptoms of PTSD can arise from many other adverse experiences. Sometimes, it’s not just a single event but a series of challenges that sets PTSD in motion. Common symptoms include mood swings, feeling emotionally numb or disconnected, struggling in relationships, or having intense emotional reactions that don’t seem to match the situation. It’s important to recognize that trauma affects everyone differently. For example, two people might experience the same event—like a car accident—but respond in completely different ways. One might bounce back quickly, while the other might need more time to heal. This range of responses is normal and valid. Many people have encountered some form of trauma, though it can help to think of these experiences as “speed bumps” rather than defining them solely as trauma. Like speed bumps on the road, these moments encourage us to slow down, reassess, and move forward with care. Even when they catch us off guard or cause pain, they don’t have to stop us entirely. The good news is that advances in therapeutic techniques have made recovery from trauma more accessible, faster, and more comfortable than ever before. By addressing the lingering effects and understanding individual responses, healing becomes not only possible but empowering.

Chandler, Arizona therapist: Kathy Gusenkov, marriage and family therapist
Trauma and PTSD

Kathy Gusenkov

Marriage and Family Therapist, MS, LMFT
Trauma is defined as the charge that's left behind in the body after a completely overwhelming experience. Most folks have gone through something that has felt completely overwhelming that they didn't have the support to return to a sense of calmness after. If this is the case, how can your relationship NOT be affected by trauma in one way or another? Whether you have experienced trauma before your relationship or during it, together or separately, trauma may come into your dynamic and start wreaking havoc on your sense of togetherness, connection, and vision as a couple. When trauma interrupts a couple's relationship, it can be very easy for both partners to start working against each other and lose their sense of safety. It can also be really difficult for both partners to see each other for who they both really are instead of what the trauma fears or desperately hopes they are. Couple therapy with a trauma trained therapist addresses the impact of trauma on the relationship with sensitivity and care. If your relationship has been impacted by trauma, I can offer a secure environment for both partners to cultivate safety, sensitivity, care, and support towards each other at a pace that is determined by you. Relationship work is vulnerable; trauma work is vulnerable; relationship and trauma work at the same time?? That can feel SO scary. I get it. Let's go at your pace and focus on safety together. I will walk alongside you both as you learn to reclaim your relationship from the impact of trauma.

Chandler, Arizona therapist: Caitlin Derouen, licensed professional counselor
Trauma and PTSD

Caitlin Derouen

Licensed Professional Counselor, NCC, LPC, EMDRT
I specialize in treating trauma and PTSD utilizing safe, integrative and trauma informed approaches. I am trained in EMDR, a highly effective method for treating complex and deeply rooted trauma to alleviate symptoms and remove the impact of triggers that may be affecting your daily life. EMDR seeks to use our brain's natural healing ability to alter the unhealthy internal narratives that became a part of our story when the trauma occurred. For this reason, EMDR is my preferred method for addressing trauma of almost any kind. I am also certified in Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), a technique that allows me to quickly provide patients with some relief from their symptoms through guiding them through their internal process in a creative way to encourage desensitization to triggers and alleviation of difficult symptoms.

Ema Grant

Licensed Professional Counselor, MS LPC
Trauma is defined not by what happened to us, but by how our hearts, minds, and bodies respond to what happened to us. Whether you have experienced "big" or "little" traumas, you have had experiences which have changed the way you see yourself and the world around you. I hope to help you reclaim the life you want to live and make peace with the parts of your story which hurt you. As you learn to trust your heart, mind, and body again, you will also learn to trust in safe relationships and in your own intuition and strength.

Trauma comes in many varieties. In classical PTSD we focus on Abuse, and even then, on severe and dramatic episodes of abuse. A more nuanced and sophisticated approach looks also at "small t" trauma with the same level of respect and seriousness. Neglect is a part of this. Abandonment The history of failed treatments for Trauma is epic. I believe that Shame and Trauma are at the core of psychological distress.

Tempe, Arizona therapist: Michaela Decker, counselor/therapist
Trauma and PTSD

Michaela Decker

Counselor/Therapist, LMFT
Frequently, people who have experienced trauma develop extraordinary survival skills. Often the strategies that were critical for survival, are not sustainable long term and thwart the ability to develop satisfying work, family and/or romantic relationships. Therapy provides an opportunity to become "unstuck" and transcend thinking and behavior patterns that are holding you back from realizing your potential. I specialize in the treatment of PTSD, anxiety and depression, and am trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). When distress from a disturbing event remains, the upsetting images, thoughts, and emotions may create an overwhelming feeling of being back in that moment. EMDR therapy helps the brain process these memories, and allows normal healing to resume. EMDR therapy is not complete until attention has been brought to the past memories that are contributing to the problem, the present situations that are disturbing, and what skills the needed for the future.

Growth Counseling - Peter Tumolo

Licensed Professional Counselor, LPC
As Bessel Van Der Kolk says "The Body Keeps the Score". This statement refers to the now scientifically proven notion that trauma is not just the "bad things" that happen to us, but what happens in our bodies as well. Trauma is the lump in our throats, the heaviness in our chests, the anxiety in our stomachs, and tension in our muscles. In order to help heal from trauma and PTSD, we need to connect to our bodies and bring the body into the therapeutic experience. I am certified in EMDR which is proven to help process and heal past trauma of all kinds, including "shock trauma" (war, natural disasters, car accidents) and "relational/developmental trauma" (emotional abuse, neglect, sexual abuse).

I help clients work through complex trauma and PTSD resulting from childhood abuse and neglect. This may have looked like experiencing bullying, having strict parents, trying to meet impossible expectations, hitting, shaming, fighting, lack of emotional connection, or something else. These experiences leave us trapped in cycles from the past that can feel hard to escape.
