Does your anxiety feel like it comes out of the blue, or is it more like a constant buzz around you waiting for a sudden spike? Being worried or even fearful is natural, how we manage it though can determine whether it acts as a productive agent pushing us forward or an interfering barrier to progressing on goals or in life. It is a protective response, but one that can sometimes be applied to things that don't make sense, or overwhelm us to where problem solving is difficult or impossible. Come explore it and discover some skills to assist in managing anxiety more effectively.

Craig Springer

Do you worry about work constantly when you’re at home, or feel anxious and tense even about small events?
Is your mind riddled with a powerless sense of imminent danger, a place where rising panic can be difficult to quell?
Does your apprehension make it difficult to get on with regular life and enjoy each day?
Do you struggle with recurrent thoughts that bring about fear, doubt and anxiety and compel you to engage in safety and sometimes nonsensical behaviors?
Do you often experience the urge to seek reassurance from friends or family members to keep your doubts, worries, and fears at bay?
These signs and symptoms are common in those suffering from anxiety disorders. Anxiety and fear can have even paralyzing effects in many aspects of your life; however, there is hope for a calm and serene horizon.
Anxiety is not your fault or caused by anything you have or haven’t done.
It is important to know that you are not alone and that many other people experience problems with anxiety. The good news? There is help.
Like many other illnesses, effective treatments exist to decrease your suffering and reconnect you with a happier, healthier life.
We have wide-ranging experience supporting people with anxiety disorders including: fears of objects or places, social phobias, separation anxiety, performance anxiety, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. The evidence-based treatments that we use can enable you to effectively manage your symptoms, regain control, and begin to experience greater joy.
So, if you frequently experience…
– Constant feelings of dread
– A pounding heart, the racing heightened by the slightest of frights
– Anticipating the worst, regardless of evidence
– Physical symptoms like headaches, sweating, shakes and jumpiness, trouble concentrating, a frequent need to urinate and stomach uneasiness
Or if you often think…
– “It’s safer to stay at home.”
– “But what if…”
– “I can’t breathe / do this / relax / stop / switch off!”
– “They or I could be in danger!”
…Then I am glad you found me. While I know this condition can come with a stigma that may have stopped you from seeking the care you need, your life can and should get better. The evidence-based therapeutic methods that I use can help to bring you substantial relief. If you’d like me to assist you, please contact me today for an appointment.

Jayson L. Mystkowski
Psychologist, Ph.D., ABPP
While Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (CBT) is highly effective in the treatment of anxiety disorders (e.g., Panic Disorder, Social Phobia, and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder), clinicians do see some “return of fear,” or partial relapse, in some patients due to a variety of factors. Over the past two decades, treatment researchers, with whom Dr. Jayson Mystkowski had the pleasure of working with at UCLA for over 10 years, have studied “return of fear” and discovered some key variables that may optimize the effects of learning during CBT for anxiety disorders (Craske et al., 2008).
First, evidence suggests that focusing on tolerating fear versus eliminating fear yields better clinical outcomes in the long term. Namely, teaching clients that fear and anxiety are normal feelings, rather than attempting to “down-regulate” such feelings all the time, is more realistic and seems to engender “hardier” clients. Second, helping clients to generate an expectancy that “scary things will not happen,” is very powerful. To do this, it is important for clinicians to create more complex exposure exercises (i.e., tasks in which a client confronts a stimulus of which they are afraid), using multiple feared stimuli instead of one at a time. Then, the lack of a feared outcome becomes particularly surprising and memorable for a client and fear reduction is more potent. Third, increasing the accessibility and retrievability of non-fear memories learned during treatment are powerful factors in mitigating against a return of fear. Craske and colleagues demonstrated that exposure to variations of a feared stimulus, using a random schedule across multiple contexts or situations, is more effective than exposure to the same stimulus, on a predictable schedule, in an unchanging environment. The former paradigm, it is argued, creates stronger non-fear memories that are easier for a client to access when subsequently confronting feared objects or situations outside of the therapy context, than the later scenario.
In sum, clinicians have long been aware that some fear or anxiety returns following very successful CBT treatment. As mentioned above, there are some clear, empirically supported ways to modify the therapy we provide to further help clients generalize the gains made in therapy sessions to the real world.

None of us is immune to anxiety and I believe we need a certain amount of anxiety in order to get out of bed each morning and to push ourselves to meet all that we have to accomplish in a given day. Balance, however, is essential. Too much anxiety immobilizes and stymies us, but too little can also create complications for motivation, productivity, goal-setting, and self-esteem.
