Seeking help is a powerful step to improving your quality of life. Talking to someone about whatever your concerns are is something that almost anyone can benefit from, but many people are afraid to reach out. If you are considering therapy or coaching, I applaud you, and I really do want to help you find what you need to feel POWERFUL and help you develop the tools to have peace in your life. I enjoy working with diverse clients, and have treated patients on the inpatient as well as outpatient basis. I began providing therapy in 1996, and have worked full time in several local hospitals before deciding to work full time in outpatient private practice. Though I work with many populations, I enjoy helping individuals with issues of trauma as well as working with couples. I work with all age ranges and have helped clients with a range of diagnosis. I use a variety of techniques, including but not limited to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and EMDR. I am also a Certified Hypnotist and a trained mediator.

Are you in need of a supportive and empathetic listener, who can provide feedback and guidance and will tailor treatment to fit your individual needs? I work with individuals, couples, and families. I see clients with anxiety, depression, trauma, stress, or low self- esteem and many other issues. I also have experience working with people who have various addiction problems and their families. Some of the issues that people that come to see me are struggling with are relationship problems, communication difficulties, loneliness, life transitions, and work-life balance. Do you want to feel happier and more confident because you have been struggling with negative emotions and low self-worth? Do you want to cope with your loss or trauma because you have been feeling overwhelmed and stuck in the past? Do you want to communicate better and resolve conflicts with others in your life? Are you struggling with marriage problems and not sure what to do to make your marriage last? We will first complete an assessment and then we will work collaboratively to produce a treatment plan based on your specific individual needs. I see individuals, couples, and families. I have day and evening appointment hours. I use various approaches to treatment including Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), Motivational Interviewing, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Narrative therapy. For couples therapy, I apply principles from the Gottman method, emotionally focused couples therapy and narrative therapy. I look forward to working with you to reduce distress and increase well-being, to improve relationships and social skills, and to find meaning and purpose in your life. I am passionate about all matters pertaining to mental and emotional health and well-being. I enjoy helping my clients to be able to identify their own strengths and to start believing in their capabilities to achieve their goals and realize their dreams. I feel that, often, the necessary ingredient for this to happen is simply having someone believe in you and to walk side-by-side in the journey. I provide teletherapy services using secure video teleconferencing for the comfort, convenience, added privacy and safety of my clients.

With technology, you can experience all the benefits of in-person therapy on secure, easy-to-use, high-quality internet platforms. Online sessions allow you to do therapy in the comfort of your own home or allow you flexibility in environments that best suit you. It can be especially helpful to those who find it challenging to travel to an office for appointments due to location, work, children at home, lifestyle, or other practical or personal reasons. While there are multiple ways that counseling can take place online, I work primarily with face-to-face video conferencing via Zoom and, on occasion, telephone sessions. I always hold my sessions in a quiet and confidential space, giving you the same confidentiality & professionalism that you experience within an office setting. Most, if not all, of my clients, find virtual sessions to be highly effective and convenient. They allow for the comfort and safety of therapy in your own space, and no travel time is often less vulnerable than needing to go to an office. Research of multiple studies finds that online therapy is equally effective as in-person for most cases. That being said I always advocate for what works best for each individual and it is wonderful to have choices to find your best path whichever that may be. If you are not super-computer savvy or are anxious about how to use technology, I will work to make it as seamless as possible. I have chosen a platform that is easy to use and I am happy to assist you with any questions or concerns. A common concern I hear from clients regarding online therapy is finding a quiet and/or confidential space when you’re homebound with children and/or family members or roommates. Be sure and scope this out in advance so you are guaranteed quiet and privacy during your session. Since it is so convenient many times people forget to allow themselves a few minutes to "switch hats" and allow themselves a few breaths and get settled into being present and in the head/body space for your session. Headphones or Airpods can often make audio clearer or ensure more privacy but are not necessary. Given that video sessions can be conducted on your smartphone, clients have found it helpful to go to a park, sit in their car in the driveway, and/or walk around your neighborhood. Get creative and support yourself. Find a private space that allows you to receive support no matter where you are. You are welcome to have pets join your space if you find that comforting, and supporting, and you may see my fellow feline/canine therapists join in one of our sessions on my end.

Chicago, Illinois therapist: Merrisa Dawn Santos, licensed professional counselor
Narrative

Merrisa Dawn Santos

Licensed Professional Counselor, MA, LPC, NCC, CCTMHP, CCTP
I became a psychoanalytical therapist because I believe in the transformative power of self-awareness and understanding. The profound impact of exploring the depths of the unconscious mind and uncovering the roots of one's thoughts and behaviors can lead to lasting change and emotional well-being. I chose psychoanalysis as my therapeutic approach because it provides a unique framework for delving into the complexities of the human psyche, offering individuals a profound opportunity for self-discovery and healing. Psychoanalysis, with its emphasis on the unconscious mind, allows me to work with patients in a way that goes beyond surface-level symptoms, addressing the underlying causes of emotional struggles. I am passionate about providing a space where individuals can explore their thoughts, feelings, and past experiences in a deep and meaningful way, fostering insight and facilitating personal growth.

I work with adults and couples from different walks of life. As a holistic practitioner, I’ve come to understand it’s a different dance for each person when working towards embodying their voice, choice, boundaries, and authenticity. I take into consideration your experiences relationally and with systems and how they may impact the relationship to your inner landscape. My identities: 1st generation Vietnamese immigrant, non-binary, queer, polyamorous & ex-catholic. Also being someone who is neurodivergent, along with the intersection of these identities, has shaped the way I move in the world while inspiring me to continue being curious & going outside of the box when I work with each unique human. I incorporate mind-body practices: IFS, Somatic Experiencing (SE), and trauma-informed yoga. Areas I have supported clients with: burnout, stress, neurodivergence, anxiety, depression, breakups/divorce, relationship challenges, boundaries, communication, trauma, life transitions, and exploring their gender, sexuality, identities & relationship styles. My approach is non-judgmental, informed-consent, and person-centered while drawing upon an intersectional lens to honor each unique human where you are seen, heard, and feel like you matter. I believe in supporting clients to lead as you are the expert of your lived experiences while collaborating and at times challenging you on your reblooming journey.

Indianapolis, Indiana therapist: Dr. Ruth Viehoff, psychologist
Narrative

Dr. Ruth Viehoff

Psychologist, PsyD, HSPP
Hello, I'm Dr. Ruth Viehoff, and it's a pleasure to virtually meet you. I specialize in working with anxious overachievers, perfectionists, and adults with ADHD. My clients are often worriers and people who struggle to meet their own exacting standards, even though to an outsider's view, they may appear to have it all together. Often my clients are so concerned and caring towards others, but can struggle to care for themselves and advocate for their own needs. In therapy, we work to introduce self-compassion and shift personal standards that may get in the way of enjoying your life. While I'm physically located in Indianapolis, IN, the majority of my clients see me virtually. Whether you live in Indiana, New York, Massachusetts, or a participating Psypact state, I'd love to connect with you and help you to live a more authentic, embodied, and joyful life. Reach out to me today to book a free consultation call!
