Alexandria, Virginia therapist: Kathryn Ziemer, psychologist
Relationship and Marriage Counseling

Kathryn Ziemer

Psychologist, PhD
Every relationship has its challenges. Sometimes it takes an outside person to help you and your partner work through these challenges in an empathic and objective way. I use techniques that have been proven to work. Together, we will create a trusting and safe environment where you and your partner can talk openly about the issues that divide you. I don’t take sides or place blame. Instead, I work to understand each of you as individuals and as a couple. Our work will focus on building better communication skills, having more positive experiences as a couple, and coping more effectively with challenges. Together, you and your partner can build a stronger relationship.

Navigating relationship difficulties can be profoundly challenging for couples, often leading to feelings of disconnect and frustration. Understanding and resolving these issues typically requires exploring underlying dynamics and communication patterns within the relationship, a process best facilitated by a skilled professional. I offer couples counseling designed to provide a safe and supportive space for both partners to express their needs, fears, and desires openly. Through guided conversations and therapeutic techniques, we work together to strengthen your bond, improve communication, and foster a deeper understanding between you. Lakeway, Texas therapist: Norma J. Perez, psychologist
Relationship and Marriage Counseling

Norma J. Perez

Psychologist, PhD
I have been married over 43 years so I can tell you, relationships are hard but so worth it. I love working with couples to help them realize what really is normal and messy and how to navigate normal and messy. I will listen to you and your partner describe what each of you see as an issue, then hear your examples and teach each of you how you can approach the situation differently to give you a better outcome. Couples come in thinking they are going to tell me everything that is wrong with their partner and to fix them. I help individuals realize how their own actions can change the outcome. Once everyone focuses on doing their own work, then they see the desired outcome in the relationship. It sounds uncomfortable, but it's really a lot of fun and we laugh a lot.

Hinsdale, Illinois therapist: Dr. Brian Weir, psychologist
Relationship and Marriage Counseling

Dr. Brian Weir

Psychologist, PsyD
My work with couples often focuses on finding the underlying conflict and/or unmet needs that can end up festering and eroding the foundation of the relationship. I help each partner discover these needs and communicate in more accurate and productive ways. This can help each other genuinely want to understand and meet each other's needs, instead of deny/defend patterns that may exist. In cases of various forms of infidelity, after the direction and goal of therapy is explored, we may examine conditions that led to the behavior and learn from them to build a stronger and healthy relationship. Moreover, this process can help toward establishing long term forgiveness and trust. It can be surprising what is possible to overcome and how much better things can be.

Having worked with hundreds of couples over the last 40 years, I have developed a set of beliefs or ideas which, if adopted, help to ensure that a relationship will last. Here is a list of them. 1) Arguing helps nothing, so don't do it. I like to say that I never met the person who started the fight! When two people argue, each of them believes that he or she is merely reacting to something the other one did or said. Neither one believes that they started the fight; but it started somehow, didn't it? 2) It is better to be close than it is to be “right.” Blaming each other for the argument is counterproductive. So is trying to change the other person's opinion. Most couples who argue, argue about whose perception is "correct," whose way of doing something is the "right" way, and so on. The only possible outcome of these arguments is that someone will be "right" and someone will be "wrong." Do you know anyone who enjoys being wrong? Most people will fight tooth and nail to avoid being "wrong." 3) Commitment is the Foundation of the Therapy.Commitment implies that you are in the relationship "come Hell or high water," barring certain behaviors your partner might do such as having an affair (although I have seen a number of relationships recover from those, too).

Relationships are special and take considerable work. It doesn't matter if you are seeking a therapist to help you early in your relationship before "stuff happens" or are trying to back up and address longer standing patterns, I can help you be a strong "Us". When working with relationships we are going to talk about ways to make you a team and help you improve the ways you talk with each other to increase your understanding.
