Feeling down, stressed, or out of control? I get it. Let me help you through what you're going through. As an Asian immigrant therapist working in the United States, I encounter people of all colors, genders, religious beliefs, and sexual orientations. They may seek therapy because they are struggling with their identities. My job is to help them embrace themselves, rather than reject who they are. I use a strengths-based approach to help you find peace - that means I’ll always be looking for things you’re doing right, not things you’re doing wrong. I will help you find your own strength and cultivate resilience through the ups and downs of life. There are a number of tools I bring with me to the therapy room, and I use whatever approach will be most helpful to the client in front of me. I like to incorporate a trauma-focused Dialectic Behavioral Therapy (DBT) approach to help you manage intense emotions and Person-Centered Therapy to put you in the driver’s seat of the counseling process. It is a privilege for me to be invited into my clients' world, and to bear witness to their ups and downs. I feel honored to use my skills and knowledge to help them lead richer, more meaningful lives.

Trauma has a way of making you feel like you're so small – like you've lost your place in the world and your words no longer carry weight. But what if I told you that the key to redefining those traumatic experiences lies in a simple yet profound realization? Here it is: you are a being of immense value, and the moment you own that truth, you regain control. As a licensed therapist, I've clocked countless hours with survivors of trauma just like you. My goal is to remind you of one critical thing: You're not a sum of your experiences or a casualty of your past. You're a one-of-a-kind individual, capable of growth, joy, and yes—even laughter. Therapy isn’t just about addressing the past; it's about reclaiming your agency, your voice, and your life. Sometimes life throws us into black holes of trauma and uncertainty, where we can feel insignificant and voiceless. In our work together, I will strive to be that person pulling you out of the abyss, validating your experiences, and ensuring your words carry weight. The goal here isn't just survival: the goal is thriving, reclaiming your voice, and recognizing your immense value in the world.

Facing our present world is a lot! This on top of managing the daily challenges of relationships, finances, and work. I offer a unique kind of time and space where you can slow down and examine the identities and narratives that shape your life. I am an active listener who gives constructive feedback to help you reach your goals. I invite you to recognize your strengths and apply them to the parts of your life that may need growth. My clients are facing life transitions, relationship challenges, struggles with romance, new parenthood, as well as many other mental health needs. I help people process the stress of caregiving for a loved one, whether a sick partner, a parent, or a child. I have both personal and professional experience with neurodiverse kids and work with parents to help them be better allies for their twice-exceptional, autistic, and/or ADHD kids. I also work with artists to help them navigate the unique challenges of an art career in NYC. I am bilingual and conduct therapy with many of my clients in Spanish. I am the author of a memoir, Walking the Night Road, about parental loss and teach workshops that focus on writing as a therapeutic tool.

It can be challenging to understand why you’re going through difficulties in life—and even more difficult to identify your needs during these times. Wherever you are in your life’s journey, I’m here to support you along your path of self-discovery and well-being. As a trained Art Therapist, I combine talk therapy, art, and creative self-expression so you can release the emotions, experiences, and thoughts that you can’t always share with words. Through our work together, you’ll connect with your inner self, discover the creative resources within you, find ways to cope, and authentically express yourself. I work from an intersectional and social justice framework. As a female therapist of color, I'm committed to validating personal experiences and intersections of identity including race, ethnicity, and gender. Many of my clients are grappling with racism, discrimination, and systemic oppression. Having the space to creatively express and process how these systems impact mental health can be incredibly healing. You don’t need artistic skills or background to work with me—just curiosity and a willingness to explore your emotions through creativity. If there’s something inside of you that you want to express but aren’t sure how, reach out. I’m looking forward to hearing from you!

Ashley Chan

Counselor/Therapist, MHC-LP
I strive to create a nonjudgmental and supportive space for clients to feel safe exploring their curiosity and being introspective. Therapy is a powerful tool to gain connection within yourself and those around you. I support my clients to overcome obstacles toward their goals and improve their quality of life, by looking at anxiety, emotional dysregulation, identity struggle, and/or developmental trauma. I tend to utilize mindfulness techniques to help clients stay grounded when overcoming anxiety and working through trauma. When met with resistance, such as intrusive thoughts, I encourage clients to challenge and reframe them to avoid engaging in negative emotions and/or behaviors. Sometimes a little support from others to affirm you are on the right path is all you need! I hope to be that person for you. Seeking the support you need takes great courage and is the greatest gift you can give yourself to begin healing. There is no better time than now and you don't have to do it alone.

Have you gone most of your life feeling like you don’t belong or are simply overlooked? I get it. Growing up as a person of color is complicated. Of course, I felt pride in who I was, but that did not diminish the challenges I faced every day. Not having a space where I could express myself and feel understood is the main reason that I decided to become a therapist. My goal as a therapist is to create a safe space for anyone feeling overlooked or misunderstood, especially individuals in the BIPOC community, to discover and express their true selves. The next generations deserve to know that mental health is just as imperative as physical health, and that seeking help is nothing to be ashamed of. As your therapist, I will help you invest in yourself, grow your confidence, and discover the person you dream of being. My goal is to help each of my patients become the strongest version of themselves while I am there supporting them through every victory and setback.

Navigating this world as a marginalized individual is hard. As a neurodivergent, queer individual, I get it. I feel an intense desire to help those who feel marginalized or shut out by society begin to feel acknowledged and loved while they begin to understand how they can take up space in this world without being rejected. You are the expert on your own life, I am simply here to guide you along your journey. I am deeply passionate about how humans think, work, and view the world, and want to help you explore your curiosities and come to a better understanding of yourself. Will you learn something new about yourself in therapy? I hope so! When I think about a person's mental health, I see it as a biological, psychological, and sociological experience intrinsically tied to many systems, some of which are beyond our control. Together, I can help you take control of what you can change and learn to adapt to the things that you can’t. With this mindset, I will help you better understand your surroundings and the effect the world has on your mental, physical, and social health. Together, we can create a better world focused on healing.

The language of therapy has become ubiquitous in our culture. While the therapist in me appreciates this development, particularly if it is accompanied by a destigmatizing of mental health care, I understand some of the skepticism some might feel regarding therapy in general. For example, it is worth asking: How is it that our society seems increasingly alienated and atomized, even as acknowledgment of trauma and ideas pertaining to emotional healing gain prominence in our discourse? Given all of this focus on self-care and wellness, why does it seem like so many of us feel more alone and lost than ever? Certainly, this dynamic is in part due to larger structural forces that shape our lives in ways both obvious and imperceptible. But rest assured, therapy absolutely can be a force for good, so long as we never lose sight of the paramountcy of human connection and avoid retreating into narcissism. My approach to therapy is integrative, with an emphasis on relational work and psychodynamic principles and application. I offer a warm, non-judgmental, and non-authoritarian space where we will identify the feelings and assumptions that generate the self-defeating patterns preventing you from experiencing joy and fulfillment in your life. So many of us desire to feel more connected, less anxious, and less alienated, but we simply do not know how to achieve this reality. This is especially true for some of us who have experienced attachment disruptions, or even more severe forms of trauma. Or, perhaps we see a path forward, but that path vanishes suddenly without warning and is replaced by malaise and renewed uncertainty, or, even worse, despair. Our work together will focus on developing that path in such a way where it will endure even in the face of adversity and the intrusion of the past into the present.

The negative stories that society tells people of color impact their self worth, comfort in their own skin, and relationships. My practice focuses on rewriting those narratives so clients can understand their lived experience, challenge internalized beliefs, and heal from the impacts of racial oppression. As a psychotherapist, I work to empower the disempowered through an anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and intersectional approach. My focus is creating a space for clients to be unapologetically themselves, while gaining the confidence to navigate the world around them. My clients are mainly Black women, Muslim women, and women of color struggling with self love, self esteem, colorism, hair stigma, and intersectionality. Women of color are hit the hardest with race-related stress. And yet, they seldom have the proper resources or tools to heal. In my practice, I help clients disrupt the intergenerational trauma that continues impacting them. When dealing with race related stressors in a world that dismisses these struggles, it’s easy to become discouraged. You don’t need to feel ashamed of your experiences, feelings, or identity. Let’s write a new story together.
