Can chronic pain get better?
Yes! Our brain changes and adapt throughout our lifetime (i.e., this is called neuroplasticity). Habits are essentially strengthened roads or pathways when we repeatedly do or feel or think in the same way. When we continue to travel the same road or pathway, we strengthen the habit. When we form a new habit, we make new connections and old pathways are used less/weakened. The more we travel the pathway, the more our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours become second nature (e.g., like brushing teeth).
In chronic pain, the nervous system and brain have changed due to neuroplasticity in an unhelpful way. The good news is that we all have the ability to learn and change by rewiring our brain.
Join our clinicians to participate in our 10-session Mind-Body Connection program designed to teach you strategies to manage chronic pain. Meet Laura, our awesome physiotherapist who can also provide additional strategies.
Some of our coaches have:
• Helped to start one of the largest pediatric chronic pain programs at a children’s hospital in Ontario
• Currently also at hospital chronic pain clinics
• Completed dissertation projects on chronic pain and are actively involved in ongoing research
• Hold leadership positions on regional and national chronic pain committees
• Hold academic appointments at well respected universities in which they teach and supervise trainees in the field of chronic pain
• Start psychosocial oncology programs in hospitals

Forouz Salari
Registered Social Worker, MA, MSW, RSW
Living with a chronic illness (such as PCOS, endometriosis, Crohn's disease, Celiac disease, Lupus, etc.) or chronic pain (resulting from a chronic illness, injury or trauma) can radically change your mental, emotional and physical capacity to engage in your life, including your work / studies, relationships, hobbies, interests and self-care activities. Living with these types of invisible disabilities means that others struggle to understand, empathize with, and extend grace and compassion towards you. They either do not know about, do not think about, cannot imagine, or refuse to offer you the types of accommodations that would support you to show up, engage and contribute to the best of your abilities. This can make you feel further misunderstood, isolated and marginalized, and reduce your access to resources and opportunities for care and growth.
Let's work together to:
Practice self-acceptance and self-compassion.
Learn effective ways of managing your stress to reduce the intensity of the symptoms of chronic illness and chronic pain.
Clarify your unique needs and boundaries.
Create doable plans to feel more balanced, well, fulfilled and engaged in your work / studies, relationships, and personal life.
Learn about and self-advocate for academic & workplace accommodations that can set you up for success.

Liz Dean
Registered Social Worker, M.S.W., R.S.W
With Chronic pain and illness the mind body connection becomes a focus of our work together. Physical discomfort and struggles with t he medical system takes an emotional toll. I work with chronic pain or illness through a mindfulness, trauma-informed wisdom and acceptance lens. This is my specialization as I find the worst part of chronic pain or illness is that it is often misinterpreted by the self and others as a lack of effort or care and can lead to low self-esteem and excessive shame My style is direct and genuinely non-judgemental so you can explore your history and current situation to build the wisdom and courage to find a new path forward.

Tracey Nguyen
Counsellor/Therapist, RN, MN
The psychology of chronic illness involves feeling helpless, victimized and powerless in our relationships. It involves people pleasing and being very dependent or living at the mercy of others. Healing chronic illness is centres around healing the control and power struggle in the relationships in childhood, specifically with a parent who had anger issues where you feared and lived your childhood tip toeing around their emotional tempers. This has perhaps translated into your adult life where you control others, get angry at others often, put others on a pedastol and feel powerless in some areas of your life. Healing your fears of feeling attacked and balancing the power in your relationships and releasing control are key to healing chronic illness.

Counsellor/Therapist, MACP, RP
What I am going to share may sound impossible to believe. But learning how to compassionately hold or accept the chronic pain or illness you are living with while developing skills to remove barriers for fear in your mind can give you the freedom to live the life you want. How? Working together as a team, we will mindfully explore and develop skills to drop the internal battle with the fear of pain and suffering. Letting go of the fight against ourselves changes how we think about pain and suffering; it decreases the mental focus on pain, worrying and stress, releasing you from perpetuating the cycle of pain.
Perpetual Cycle of Pain = Connecting and focusing on pain and suffering leads to avoiding experiences that may create more pain and suffering. As lived experiences and social interactions get smaller because of avoidance, we become disconnected, lonely and isolated - creating additional pain and suffering.
Let's work together to empower you to drop the struggle, learn to work with yourself, and find freedom and fulfillment.

Mariya Garnet
Pre-Licensed Professional, Pre-licensed Psychotherapist
In addressing chronic pain and illness, I employ integral neuroprogramming to facilitate a deeper understanding of the body's communication. This approach recognizes that persistent health challenges often reflect subconscious patterns and misalignments in one's life course.
My practice focuses on:
Exploring the intricate mind-body connection
Identifying subconscious patterns influencing physical symptoms
Developing techniques to reframe perspectives on pain and illness
Guiding clients towards alignment with their authentic selves
Through integral neuroprogramming, we work to recalibrate neural pathways associated with chronic conditions while addressing emotional and spiritual components. This comprehensive method aims to not only manage symptoms but to promote overall well-being.
This approach is applicable to various chronic conditions, including fibromyalgia and autoimmune disorders. The goal is to empower clients to interpret their body's signals and make informed, transformative life choices.
