Maria T. Alonso, Ph.D.

Psychologist
As a psychologist working with trauma, I utilize evidence-based treatments to help clients process and heal from their experiences. I often use Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) to assist clients in addressing and reframing the negative thought patterns and emotional responses associated with their trauma. This approach helps them develop coping strategies and gradually face and work through their traumatic memories. Additionally, I incorporate Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to facilitate the processing of distressing memories and reduce their emotional charge. My approach is empathetic and client-centered, ensuring that each individual feels supported and empowered throughout their recovery journey. By applying these evidence-based treatments, I aim to help clients regain a sense of safety and control, ultimately guiding them towards healing and resilience.

Trauma is a specialty for me. I have done hours of training on Trauma and PTSD. I use EMDR to work with trauma but along with EMDR a client must look at their patterns of thought, feeling and especially behavior. All of these work together. Once a trauma is processed, the patterns that go with the trauma must also change and grow.

Trauma and PTSD should only be treated by someone who has extensive experience with it. I spent many years working with people who have suffered trauma and developed PTSD. I rely on an approach called Prolonged Exposure therapy which does not mean that you are actively exposed to the source of your trauma but rather we work through these issues both in looking at the trauma and in what ways it has affected your life.

Karen Baumstark, Ph.D.

Psychologist, Ph.D., CMHIMP, CTACC
None of us can escape some level of trauma; inevitably, it will be a part of life. How much it affects us, however, depends on many factors including the nervous system we were born with, our outer resources, and how much relational support we receive to help us recover from the trauma. Many people do not have access to adequate resources to help them recover from trauma (and this is very subjective and personal, varying from person to person), and the trauma continues to affect them in (sometimes subtle, but still) impactful ways. If certain factors come together, PTSD may develop out of trauma. Often clients feel like they have failed because they can't completely "get over" their PTSD reactions. I have often reminded clients that PTSD is "the gift that keeps on giving". It can be very hard, perhaps impossible, to completely eradicate PTSD reactions, because the reaction is not just of the mind, it is of the whole body. My approach to helping clients with trauma and PTSD involves looking at it holistically and working to understand how the trauma changed you, your reaction across many facets of your life (thoughts, feelings, habits, behaviors, self-care or lack thereof, expectations, how you view the world), and then working on replacing what is harmful with what is helpful. The goal isn't to completely get rid of the PTSD symptoms (which is likely impossible) but rather to dramatically reduce its effect on you, so you can live your best life, and so an occasional symptom breaking through will not derail you.

Trauma impacts people in a variety of ways, so much so that some people do not recognize their experience as a result of trauma until it becomes debilitating or someone else points it out. We create a safe therapeutic space to process your past, present, and future together. We do not work on simply dismissing or letting trauma go. We work on emotional and behavioral insight, where and how the trauma is held in your life narrative, and post traumatic growth.

Trauma and PTSD, especially C-PTSD, includes any emotional experience that was upsetting and different than you had experienced up to that point in your life. C-PTSD often involves parental neglect, unavailability, or inconsistency. I am not one of the therapists who will tell you that you need to forgive and rebuild your relationsihp with anyone you choose not to have in your life. The idea that people should continue to endure mistreatment simply because someone is family is absurd. Of course, trauma and PTSD can include experiencing or witnessing any type of violence, abuse, accidents, or the threats of violence or abuse. Trauma has been my specialty since the beginning of my career and I have taken extensive training on the treatment of trauma. More importantly than if I am qualified to treat you for upsetting or traumatic past experiences is the fact that I will never minimize your experiences. Please do not avoid going to therapy because you think what you experienced was "not that bad." If it was upsetting to you when it happened and it still affects your life in any way I want to help you reduce or eliminate the impact of those experiences on your present day and future life.

Scranton, Pennsylvania therapist: Dr. Cynthia Edwards-Hawver, psychologist
Trauma and PTSD

Dr. Cynthia Edwards-Hawver

Psychologist, Psy.D.
Many women carry trauma that deeply impacts their lives in ways that are both visible and hidden. Whether from experiences in childhood, challenging relationships, or societal pressures, this trauma can become ingrained, affecting self-esteem, emotional responses, and even physical health. Trauma may manifest as anxiety, difficulty trusting others, heightened emotional reactivity, or a chronic sense of unease. These symptoms can persist long after the initial event, creating patterns that shape daily experiences, interactions, and even how one sees themselves and their potential. Narcissistic abuse, in particular, is a form of trauma that can be insidiously damaging. When subjected to a narcissist’s manipulation, gaslighting, and control, victims often experience a gradual erosion of self-worth, leading to feelings of confusion, self-doubt, and even PTSD. Narcissistic abuse can distort perceptions, making victims question their reality and feel trapped in a cycle of emotional harm. The repetitive, controlling behaviors often associated with narcissistic partners, like deflecting blame and devaluing the victim’s emotions, lead to an overwhelming emotional toll that may look like traditional PTSD symptoms, such as hypervigilance, flashbacks, and a pervasive sense of shame or guilt. In therapy, we’ll work together to address and unravel these traumas with compassion and understanding. My approach helps you identify and release the weight of these past experiences, rebuild a sense of self, and regain a sense of safety and trust. Recovery from trauma is a journey, but by untangling these experiences and their effects on you, it’s possible to rediscover resilience, strengthen personal boundaries, and regain control over your life. Whether it's reclaiming your voice after narcissistic abuse or understanding how past experiences shape your present, I’m here to support you through this journey.
