Suicidal Ideations (or suicidal thoughts) refers to thinking about or planning suicide – the act of ending one’s own life. It is not uncommon for people to experience suicidal thoughts when they are faced with times of extreme stress, serious injury or illness, or mental struggles such as Depression.
When a person feels trapped, hopeless, or is having immense emotional or physical pain, thoughts of ending life as a way out can occur. There are biological, psychological, social, and environmental factors that can increase the risk of suicide – these factors coupled with adverse life events and a belief there is no other way out can lead to suicidal ideations.
Passive Suicidal Ideation is when a person sometimes wishes they were dead but do not have any actual plans to commit suicide. However, when the thoughts turn to actual intent to kill oneself and include plans as to how to carry it out, that is called Active Suicidal Ideation.
Therapy can be very helpful for an individual with suicidal thoughts. Hopeless feelings can be improved when viewed from different perspectives and a therapist can offer those insights. Support from friends, family, and groups can be helpful for continued connection and encouragement both during and after therapy.

Dr. Stephanie Vaughn
Psychologist, Psy.D., DBT-LBC™
Most people have thought about suicide, but chronic suicidal thinking is something that needs to be addressed. Many therapists actually avoid working with people who are suicidal out of fear of liability. But someone needs to do it and our practice is committed to doing so. Learning to build a life worth living is a premise in DBT that helps when you're trying to let go of "suicide as a solution."

Kreins Psychological Services
Psychologist, PhD, PsyD
As a psychologist addressing suicidal thinking, my foremost priority is creating a safe and empathetic space for individuals to express their emotions without judgment. Through evidence-based therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and interpersonal therapy, I work collaboratively with clients to explore the underlying causes of their suicidal thoughts and develop coping strategies to manage them. By fostering a sense of hope, resilience, and connection, I aim to help individuals develop a safety plan, enhance their support networks, and build skills to navigate crises effectively. Additionally, I emphasize the importance of ongoing monitoring and communication to ensure individuals feel heard, understood, and supported throughout their recovery journey. My goal is to empower individuals to find meaning, purpose, and hope in life, while providing compassionate support and guidance every step of the way.

I believe that many people have had, at some point, suicidal thoughts due to societal pressures. Each person is different in their thoughts, beliefs, and desires. I do not believe in the desire to keep someone alive for the sake of life alone, but rather that it is my job to help someone cultivate a live a life worth living without judgement.
