Social Isolation

Renee Chu

Registered Psychotherapist, Hon. BA., RP (Qualifying)
I support clients experiencing social isolation by helping them navigate the unique barriers that contribute to their loneliness, whether related to neurodiversity, immigration and displacement, or the loss of loved ones. Together, we explore the emotional impact of these experiences and work on building connections and resilience. Through compassionate guidance, I help you find meaningful ways to reconnect with yourself and your communities, fostering a sense of belonging and support.

therapist: Nina Hopmeier, licensed professional counselor
Social Isolation

Nina Hopmeier

Licensed Professional Counsellor, Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC)
Since we are by nature social beings, isolation from society can create feelings of loss, helplessness, and loneliness. Reasons for social isolation vary from person to person. In working together, we will explore what factors have lead to social isolation and how your current lifestyle may prevent you from creating a rich and fulfilling life. A fundamental part of therapy is also exploring the factors that maintain the social isolation. The therapy models that I apply largely depend on the unique history and relationship that the client has with social isolation. If social isolation occurs due to avoiding anxiety, I would primarily work with the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) model and with the Emotion Focused Therapy model (EFT) in order to change your relationship to the uncomfortable feelings maintaining the isolation. If isolation occurs due to debilitating thoughts that create feelings of hopelessness and insecurity I would work with the Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) model in order to help you challenge thoughts that prevent you from living the life that you want. If you are somebody who isolates socially I would be happy to work with you and devise a treatment plan that aligns with your unique needs.

All of our services are virtual, meaning that you can connect with your counsellor via Zoom or over the phone. This can help bridge the gap when connecting in person feels overwhelming, or if you have limited opportunities for connection where you are. We can help you to build your social confidence and connect with others 1-on-1 and through the groups, workshops, and events that we run throughout the year.
