Stress is a natural reaction to mental tension or worry from challenging circumstances. It's a universal experience, albeit varying in intensity among individuals. How you manage stress can greatly differ. Opening up about your overwhelm and sharing it with a trusted, understanding, and knowledgeable individual can provide a fresh perspective and supportive environment. Accepting and acknowledging your stress empowers you to release past hurts and gain greater insight as you express your pain to another.

Nina Hopmeier
Licensed Professional Counsellor, Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC)
Sometimes clients may feel hopeless in managing their stress levels. They may have longer than desired work hours, too many chores to complete, and not enough leisure time. In therapy, I help clients manage stress by first gaining insight into the cause of stress. Understanding where the stress comes from assists with acknowledging the factors that maintain stress.
I also help clients acknowledge their role in the maintenance of stress in order to gain control over their lives and prevent further feelings of burnout and exhaustion. Although some stressors in life are inevitable, such as deadlines and bills, therapy involves focusing on some of the thoughts and emotions that exacerbate feelings of stress in response to life demands. We also engage in problem solving strategies largely through solution focused and cognitive behavioural approaches to determine stressors that are controllable, even though clients may initially anticipate no factors to be within their control.
After working through a range of possibilities to improve wellbeing clients often gain awareness of the resources that they have in order to cope with life demands.

There are different types of stress, some are unavoidable and some unnecessary; whenever we stretch beyond our usual familiarity there can be pressure and stress involved - that is like “growing pain” and part of expanding and evolving as we move through life. The not healthy stress is more like a mental and emotional overwhelm that exhaust us and make it difficult to keep a real perspective, we’ve lost it…to come back to clarity and ability to relate and react in a real way, we might have to look at some of our false beliefs that runs as a driving force underneath it all
