Understanding our relationship with trauma is one of the keys to developing preferred narratives in our lives. Getting to know how it influences you and those around you. Trauma refers to a deeply distressing experience that overwhelms an individual’s ability to cope. Traumatic events can include physical or sexual assault, natural disasters, accidents, or witnessing violence. When trauma remains unresolved, it can lead to mental health conditions like Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or Complex PTSD (CPTSD). PTSD often develops after a single traumatic event, with symptoms like flashbacks, nightmares, intense anxiety, and intrusive thoughts. CPTSD, on the other hand, usually stems from prolonged, repeated trauma, especially in situations where escape is difficult, such as in childhood. People with CPTSD may struggle with emotional regulation, experience negative self-perception, and encounter ongoing difficulties in relationships. Dissociative states—where a person disconnects from thoughts, emotions, memories, or their identity—are also common among trauma survivors. This response can make individuals feel detached from reality or as if they’re observing themselves from outside their body, serving as a coping mechanism to manage overwhelming distress. Daniel, a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional Level 2 (CCTP-II), has specialized training in addressing CPTSD and dissociation. His work focuses on helping clients process trauma, heal emotional wounds, and develop healthier coping strategies. Treatment may include therapy, medication, and other supportive interventions, empowering individuals to regain control and rebuild their lives with greater resilience.
