Calgary, Alberta therapist: Chris Graham, psychologist
LGBT Issues

Chris Graham

Psychologist, Registered Psychologist
I enjoy working with folks who are curious to explore their gender identity and expression, curious about transition, or contemplating their sexuality. I have worked with folks as they consider transitioning, provided referrals for folks to begin hormone replacement therapies and gender affirming surgeries, and made sense of the way gender works for them. I have enjoyed holding space for folks considering their sexuality identities, making sense of the types of sex they would like to have and the identities they would like to hold. Book your free 20 minute meet & greet today to see if I might be able to support you navigate your LGBT concerns.

Halifax, Nova Scotia therapist: Josiane Mapplebeck, counselor/therapist
LGBT Issues

Josiane Mapplebeck

Counsellor/Therapist, PhD, MEd, RCT-C, CCC
I am a queer identifying woman (pronouns she/her/hers), and I am committed to providing inclusive, compassionate care to my community. Growing up queer in Nova Scotia was difficult and there were few mental health resources available. My experiences have inspired me to become a therapist who could provide high quality, informed support to the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. I have training in gender-affirming care, and support many transgender and gender-diverse clients. I am also a poly affirming therapist. You may be looking to explore gender identity or sexual identity. You may be struggling with how your family interacts with your identity. Or you may just feel more comfortable working with a queer therapist. Wherever you may find yourself in this journey, I will create a safe, non-judgemental space where you are accepted and honoured. I will support you in navigating life’s intricacies with awareness, presence, openness, and transparency. —– As a way to give back to my community, I have limited sliding scale spots reserved exclusively for 2SLGBTQIA+ children, youth & young adults (ages up to 22). Please feel to contact me to inquire.

LGBT issues encompass a wide range of topics related to the rights, experiences, and challenges faced by individuals in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community. Key issues include the fight for equal marriage rights, anti-discrimination protections in various aspects of life such as employment, housing, and healthcare, and the ongoing struggle against stigma and violence. Additionally, there are unique challenges for LGBTQ+ youth, including mental health concerns and the need for acceptance in schools and communities. Advocacy and education play crucial roles in promoting understanding and acceptance, fostering an inclusive society where everyone can live authentically and without fear of persecution. Openness, dialogue, and allyship are vital in supporting the rights and dignity of LGBTQ+ individuals.

LGBT Issues

Counsellor/Therapist, MA, RCC (Registered Clinical Counsellor)
LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, +) persons may encounter specific challenges (e.g., oppression and discrimination) related to their sexual orientation. These challenges may include norms and beliefs of family members, friends, church, and cultural customs. Social and cultural norms sometimes conflict with your own values, that of other cultures you belong to, and a sense of who you are. Some communities maintain entrenched beliefs and stereotypes of LGBTQ+ persons. In those cases, there may be resistance to accept you because you do not meet certain cultural expectations. As a result, a LGBTQ+ person may feel shame, and low self-esteem and self-worth. These feelings can lead to depression and anxiety and you may withdraw from others to protect yourself from hurt and feel lonely at the same time. When you grow up around negative attitudes or discrimination against a group people for their sexuality or gender, it may also be difficult to accept and express yourself for who you truly are. You may find it difficult to be curious about, and explore, your sexuality and identity. As a South Asian born man (he/him) in a second-generation immigrant family in Canada, I understand some of the complexities of culture, sexuality, and gender expression. I am excited to support you on this journey. I celebrate and stand with you as a LGBTQ+ person.
