Trauma and PTSD

Tim Eby-McKenzie

Marriage and Family Therapist, MA, LMFT
Most of my clinical career has focused on finding more efficient and effective ways to address, understand and heal the impact of trauma in people's lives. Acute Stress Disorder and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) are two ways trauma manifests in people's lives when trauma gets "stuck" in the nervous system, and cannot resolve effectively and adaptively. I use EMDR to assist clients to overcome this "stuckness" and to move forward into healthier lives.

Many of our clients also struggle with trauma and PTSD, especially as a result of the minority stress experienced and their many intersections of minorities identities. We use several modalities including DBT, EMDR, IFS to help heal the reactions to harmful events and experiences.

PTSD requires lots of patience as the individual in treatment learns to interact with the world again. Traumatic experiences shut down everything in the person's mind/body, and in their social interactions, and create a lot of isolation. To counter all this, I recommend a unique program for each patient that includes talking at least twice a week, micro-stimulation to develop new pathways in the brain, supplements to heal the brain, music therapy (see Steven Halpern), sleep therapy, and the creation of "flow experiences" to strengthen the person's sense of self. Trauma is not easy to turn around, But, over a consistent period of time, expressing one's emotions and following a set routine (including the above), will always lead to healing.

When a person goes through emotional trauma, it can have a significant influence on their future and shape their life. It can become an important part of their identity, impacting how they behave and interact with others. Childhood trauma frequently causes severe neuroses as well as a lingering sense of inferiority and inadequacy. Following the traumatic event, emotions accumulated one after another. To heal, these emotions need to be addressed in reverse order. It's like peeling an onion—gradually shedding the weight of painful feelings, layer by layer, as they are released.
