Body image refers to how people see themselves. Distorted body image (also called negative body image) refers to an unrealistic view of how someone sees their body. Like eating disorders, it is seen most commonly in women, but many men also suffer from the disorder. You begin forming your perceptions of your body’s attractiveness, health, acceptability and functionality in early childhood. This body image continues to form as you age and receive feedback from peers, family member, coaches, etc. Personality traits such as perfectionism and self-criticism can also influence the development of a negative internalized image of your body until you bring awareness to the negative effects that body image has on the mind, body, and soul. I will create a safe environment where you can identify your thoughts and feelings exploring for possible triggers. The purpose of this is to weaken the trigger by desensitizing it or teaching you skills to counter-act the trigger so you can be more confident and increase your self-esteem. Cognitive restructuring will begin by first exploring how your negative body image is influenced by cultural beliefs, peers and society. Ego strengthening is a necessary part of the process where a healthy relationship with the therapist is established by creating boundaries and a safe container.

If you feel trapped in your mirror, hating what you see no matter what you do, you are not alone. While body image problems are very common in our society, you can learn to see yourself in a positive light. If you are willing to change the way you think, you can free yourself from the bondage of your mirror and learn to treat yourself with respect and dignity.

We are born happy in our own skin. As kids, we are curious about our bodies and enjoy exploring them. Then something goes wrong. A well-meaning parent suggests we skip dessert, and the dolls we play with are so anatomically inaccurate they would fall over if they were humans. Then we start to attend school and become more aware of the larger culture. We notice only certain types of bodies are portrayed in the media. Our peers and our social media tell us we should look a particular way. This story may sound familiar, and sadly, it’s a common one. Unfortunately, for so many of us, the dissatisfaction with our bodies starts when we are young and persists for many years, particularly if we don’t start to examine how we think. Together, through radical self-acceptance, fat positivity, and the anti-diet framework we can begin to work toward healing.
