Codependency is a dynamic that happens often in the relationships of those who are dealing with an addiction. The ct was given a handout entitled, “Codependency.” Codependent relationships are a type of relationship in which one person supports or enables another person's addiction, poor mental health, irresponsibility, or under-achievement. People with a predisposition to be a codependent enabler often are in relationships in which the person's primary role is that of rescuer, supporter, and confidante. These helper types are often dependent on the other person's poor functioning to satisfy the codependent's own emotional needs. Codependency often involves placing a lower priority on one's own needs, while being excessively preoccupied with the needs of others. Codependency can occur in any type of relationship, including family, work, friendship, romantic, peer, or community relationships. Codependency may also be characterized by denial, low self-esteem, excessive compliance, or control patterns. Bringing awareness to these unhealthy patterns is the first step to strategically go from co-dependency to interdependency.

Barbara Jaurequi Counseling
Marriage and Family Therapist, MS, LMFT, MAC
Don't waste your life obsessing about the problems of someone else. Don't spend all your energy trying to control the behaviors of anyone. Codependency is a real addiction that masquerades as love. Love shouldn't hurt...love isn't self-destructive, but codependency is. This is an area of psychotherapy that I know VERY well. I will help you put the focus back on your own life - where it belongs. Nothing is more maddening than trying to do the impossible again and again only to fail again and again. That's codependency in a nut shell. The good news is that you can recover from codependency and learn to be happy. I use Reality Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy interventions to help you get your life back in order and I will teach you ways to change codependent patterns so you can make healthy, self-respecting choices for a better life.

Codependency often stems from unresolved childhood experiences and unconscious patterns of relating to others. In a psychoanalytic approach, we will explore the deeper meanings behind your codependent behaviors, examining how past relationships and experiences may be influencing your current dynamics. By understanding the underlying emotional and psychological factors contributing to codependency, we can work together to develop healthier ways of relating to yourself and others. This may involve exploring themes of abandonment, control, and self-worth, and developing strategies to break free from harmful patterns.
