Loss or Grief

David Redbord

Registered Psychotherapist, MA, MPH, LPCC
Grief is the feeling of sadness that happens after the experience of loss. It could be the loss of a person like a parent or a child, a pet, or even a situation like your home or workplace. Grief is a nonlinear process. It arises in unexpected moments. Over time, though, as we allow ourselves to feel the grief as long as we’re not pushing it down when it comes up, it will come up less and less as more time passes. I’d be honored to support you in working with grief effectively.

Marriage and Family Therapist, LMFT
Navigating the terrain of grief and loss is a deeply personal process, and my approach is rooted in compassion, patience, and understanding. I recognize that each person's experience of loss is unique, and there's no "right" way to grieve. In our sessions, I offer a supportive space where you can express your sorrow, confusion, and memories without judgment. We'll explore the impact of your loss, acknowledging the pain while also discovering ways to honor your loved one and the relationship you shared. Together, we'll work on coping strategies that resonate with you, helping you to gradually find a new sense of balance and meaning in life. My aim is to walk beside you through your grief, offering support and guidance as you move through the healing process at your own pace.

I have helped a wide variety of people who are experiencing grief. In fact, I would assert that we are in grief stages or grieving something, even if it a part of yourself in parenthood for example that has shifted beyond recognition. Greif whether acute or chronic is a condtion of being human. Walking a path that acknowledges grief and loss means that we can live more fully; I would argue it is key.

Everyone experiences grief in their own unique way. I provide a safe environment where you can process and discuss your experiences with grief. I help normalize what you're going through so that there can be more self-acceptance and understanding. Grief is not just death, but a loss in many areas of our lives. Since the pandemic, we are all experiencing grief in one way or another. We need a place where we can be heard and a place where we can express all of our feelings.

One of my favorite Marvel quotes from WandaVision captures my perspective on grief and loss: “But what is grief if not love persevering?” Exactly. Grief and loss happen all the time, and not just when we lose someone we love. Grief also happens when we lose a job, our health, our marriage falls apart, we experience a miscarriage or natural disaster or we are single and desiring to be in a partnership. Grief and loss are about adapting to change - and change is everywhere. Let me walk with you and help guide you through this journey so that you can slowly and steadily learn to incorporate the grief and loss into your life in healthy ways.

Grief comes in many forms, has no rules, and can feel more like a web than ‘stages.’ We each experience grief in our own way, which can often lead to feeling quite isolated and even unsure if we’re doing grief “right.” Grief work holds the potential for such overwhelming depth that we may try to avoid it; or maybe emotions feel so foreign it’s hard to know what you even feel or where to begin. Grief ebbs and flows and the process of grieving itself leaves us forever changed; yet is an incredibly important and vital piece of the human condition. Allow me to hold space for you, your pain, and the ache of your grief as we work together to navigate the question of how life could ever move forward after loss.

Grief and loss is a normal part of the human experience, yet the suffering is intense and often lengthy. Grief work can be for the loss of a loved one, pet, job, identity, social group, dream/goal, ability, or construct. In therapy, we discuss the difference between "normal grief" (though grief looks different for different people) and "complicated grief" where any number of factors can act as a hinderance to the grieving process. Complicated grief can look like any of the following: having a complicated relationship with the deceased (unsaid words, unsettled grievances), death that is unexpected or violent, underlying attachment wounds, lack of support/understanding from your others, or any traumatic aspect of the experience surrounding the loss. At Denver Wellness Counseling, we approach grief work with the goal of healthy grief, which is a two pronged (somewhat conflicting) goal of moving on in life while also remaining connected to the deceased in a way that feels right. We often use EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) to address the complicating or traumatic factors that are hindering the grief process. Grief work always includes a component of future work, guiding the client to successfully imagine a future where they can maintain some connection to the loss, while also living what they consider a good life.
