Chicago, Illinois therapist: Dr. Adam Shafer (Chicago, IL), psychologist
Chronic Pain or Illness

Dr. Adam Shafer (Chicago, IL)

Psychologist, Psy. D., M.A.
Managing chronic pain and illness exhausts many of the social and personal resources we have just to get through the day. Feelings of isolation and being alone in this struggle are insidious and can take away from our ability to remain connected to others and within ourselves. Whether it is not wanting to burden others with our struggle or feelings of hopelessness, people need to know (and feel) that they are valuable enough to continue to be cared for while also provided with space through encouragement that honors our autonomy.

Chicago, Illinois therapist: Tara Thompson, licensed professional counselor
Chronic Pain or Illness

Tara Thompson

Licensed Professional Counselor, MS, LPC
Individuals may experience challenges related to chronic pain or illness due to various factors, such as physical injuries, medical conditions, or emotional stress. When someone is facing this difficulty, I offer support by aiding them in understanding their pain and its impact on their life. Through therapeutic techniques like Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy and Mindfulness, I assist in managing symptoms and developing effective coping strategies. Additionally, I guide individuals in exploring their experiences and empowering them to discover meaning and purpose despite their condition. In cases where there is a partner or spouse, I collaborate with both individuals to enhance communication and provide mutual support as they navigate the challenges associated with chronic pain or illness.

Roswell, Georgia therapist: Alan Brandis, Ph.D., psychologist
Chronic Pain or Illness

Alan Brandis, Ph.D.

Psychologist, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist
Typically, Chronic Pain Syndrome patients come to see a psychologist after being seen by a number of other health professionals to no avail, including internal medicine physicians, orthopedists, surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, physical therapists, chiropractors, acupuncturists, emergency room doctors (for late-night injections of powerful pain killing drugs) and others. Typically, a Chronic Pain evaluation consists of several approaches to discovering which factors play the largest role in maintaining the pain. We ask patients to keep a Pain Diary for a week or two, which helps us pinpoint which activities or emotional states are related to an increase in pain level. This also helps us observe how they are actually taking their medications. We may also perform psychological testing to determine any underlying causes of depression or anxiety which should be treated in addition to the Chronic Pain and which could be helping to maintain it. At least one Family Session is held to explore whether there have been unconscious payoffs within the family for being in pain.

AEDP helps clients process emotional experiences related to chronic pain, fostering healing through positive emotional connection and resilience-building. EMDR is used to address any trauma or distress associated with pain, helping to reduce the emotional burden it carries. By combining these therapies with deep compassion, we support clients in reclaiming a sense of control, improving their emotional well-being, and finding relief in both mind and body.

Seattle, Washington therapist: Stephanie Ennen, therapist
Chronic Pain or Illness

Stephanie Ennen

Therapist, LPC,LCPC, LMHC
I specialize in providing therapeutic support for individuals living with chronic pain. I understand that chronic pain can significantly impact not only your physical well-being but also your emotional health, relationships, and overall quality of life. In our sessions, we will explore the complex relationship between pain, emotions, and daily functioning. Using a combination of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and mindfulness techniques, we will work together to identify and challenge negative thought patterns related to pain, helping you develop a more positive and empowering perspective. I also incorporate mindfulness and relaxation strategies to help you cultivate awareness and acceptance of your pain. These practices can assist in reducing stress and promoting a sense of calm, allowing you to better manage discomfort. Additionally, I emphasize psychoeducation to help you understand the nature of chronic pain and its effects on your life. By gaining insight into the mind-body connection, you can develop effective coping strategies and self-care routines tailored to your unique needs. My goal is to provide a safe and supportive space where you can express your feelings and experiences, empowering you to reclaim control over your life. Together, we can work towards improving your emotional resilience, enhancing your quality of life, and finding ways to navigate the challenges of chronic pain.
