Washington, Washington, D.C. therapist: David A. Heilman, psychologist
Internal Family Systems

David A. Heilman

Psychologist, Psy.D.
When deciding to see a therapist, it can be extremely challenging to choose someone to work with. I hope to be there with you in therapy as you work to discover new levels self-understanding, compassion, and insight. Most individuals decide to start therapy after encountering emotional distress that has left them overwhelmed, and as though they have lost control of their life. I work collaboratively with my clients to find ways in which they are able to regain a sense of control, empowerment, and purpose in their lives. Important to our work will be the concept that our relationship, and the exploration of that relationship, will help you make discoveries about other important relationships in your life. Although this work can be challenging at times, it can lead to improvements in your social interactions, mood, and anxiety. While I have enjoyed working with a wide variety of individuals, I specialize in LGBTQIA+ affirmative therapy, ADHD, anxiety, depression, chronic shame, couples/relationship challenges, and non-traditional relationships. I am currently seeing new clients in my Dupont Circle office, and I look forward to answering any of your questions.

Psychologist, Psy.D.
Are you a high-functioning mom in your 40s or 50s, juggling the demands of a successful career and parenting, but feeling overwhelmed by stress, anxiety, or burnout? I'm Dr. Cynthia Edwards-Hawver, a licensed clinical psychologist with a doctorate from Cornell University and 25 years of experience. I specialize in helping professional women like you navigate these challenges, providing a supportive space to explore your feelings and develop effective coping strategies. My approach addresses the root causes of your symptoms while empowering you to set healthy boundaries, manage toxic relationships, and engage in guilt-free self-care. Whether you're dealing with emotional abuse, narcissistic partners, or the emotional toll of chronic illnesses like Lyme disease, I am here to help you break free from generational trauma, assert your needs, and reclaim your well-being. With a passion for working with moms, I understand the unique challenges you face, from navigating menopause, caring for aging parents or dealing with their death, to dealing with the pressures of perfectionism and people-pleasing. My comprehensive approach is designed to help you find balance, joy, and fulfillment in both your personal and professional life. I've been through this myself and did the hard work of healing so I can help others with integrity. I'm on a mission to help other moms live their best life without guilt.

Cook Counseling and Consulting Inc.

Counselor/Therapist, LISW-S
Cook Counseling and Consulting Inc. is a group of highly trained professionals providing mental health services based in Columbus, Ohio. We work with individuals, couples, and families across the lifespan, focusing on young adults. We are also experts in LGBTQIA+ and ENM/ polyamory. Many of our clients have found great success in many facets of their lives but struggle to manage their emotions and stress. We are particularly sensitive to those experiencing life transitions like moving, a breakup, changing jobs, graduating, or beginning a new relationship when self-doubt and increased anxiety and depression can emerge. Our approach is rooted in evidence-based treatment that focuses on helping clients understand how their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are related so that they can begin making targeted and sustainable changes. Our clinicians blend person-centered therapy with cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectal behavior therapy, motivational interviewing and acceptance, and commitment therapy. We help clients understand their physical and emotional responses to stressors and learn to problem-solve ways to introduce moments of calm, to choose to respond rather than react in the face of change. Cook Counseling and Consulting Inc. focuses on ensuring our clients see real progress. We are warm, laid back, and affirming. We are sensitive to the influence of past experiences on present challenges, and we work closely with clients to reframe the narrative of their life in a way that increases self-confidence and self-compassion. Our priority in starting with a new client is ensuring that they feel safe, heard, and like an equal partner in the therapeutic process. We offer the convenience of remote sessions to help make therapy a core component of your self-care calendar.
