Indianapolis, Indiana therapist: Dr. Kimberly E. Johnson, psychologist
Trauma and PTSD

Dr. Kimberly E. Johnson

Psychologist, PsyD, HSPP, APIT
I have worked with clients who have been traumatized as a child, teenager, adult or older adult. Trauma can occur due to emotional, physical, sexual or psychological assault. Everyone experiences and manages their trauma exposure in their own unique way. Sometimes we are not even aware of events that have happened to us or have spent a lifetime trying not to remember. Regardless, that experience can impact how we think about and treat ourselves and others. Depending on the severity and duration of that trauma, it is not uncommon for it to affect our ability to work, parent, maintain relationships, function and even tolerate being around others. I work with clients who have experienced physical and psychological abuse, sexual abuse or exploitation, combat or military trauma, racism, discrimination and marginalization, sexism and violence. Everyone's story is unique and I work to help that individual process those experiences at a pace that they can manage to reclaim the life they deserve.

Bessel van der Kolk defines trauma as: any experience that overwhelms your ability to cope. Certainly life-threatening situations, like a car accident or serving in combat, count. So does consistently feeling unsafe at home because one of your parents would get violent sometimes, or worrying about where your next meal might come from. When you're faced with situations that overwhelm you, your psyche will do whatever it can to keep you alive, typically splitting itself apart in order to protect your sanity. Trouble is, after that initial overwhelm is over, you need to go back and repair that split. Otherwise, that scary, painful, overwhelming situation becomes something that haunts you. Recovery from trauma means going back and repairing those splits, and it's never too late to do it. So if you feel haunted by experiences from your past, find it hard to build meaningful relationships with others, or struggle with feeling afraid, schedule a consultation now.
