When thinking about treatment options lets take a triage approach like a medic might when faced with a medical problem. That is to say start with physical causes and supports, moving then to chemical and then on to emotional and social factors. It is possible to manage stress & anxiety.

Anxiety or Fears

Debbie Debonaire

Counsellor/Therapist, BA Hons, IMTTA, Heartmath Coach
I guide individuals in understanding the causes of their anxiety and fear symptoms. Together, we look at these causes, then introduce and build on the strategies that will serve them the best and allow them to create their own coping mechanisms so that they can overcome these anxieties and fears to live a calm and free life. Anxiety and fears, addressed through Anxiety Disorders Therapy, are a focus that aims to alleviate persistent worry and irrational fears that interfere with daily life. This speciality involves diagnosing specific anxiety disorders, such as generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and phobias, and employing evidence-based treatments to manage them. Using a combination of cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), exposure therapy, meditation, Heartmath Principles and mindfulness techniques to help individuals confront their fears, reduce anxiety symptoms, and regain control over their lives.

Anxiety is something many people experience across their lifetime . When anxiety starts limiting how you want to live, therapy can be a beneficial way to become aware of how the anxiety came to be. I have worked extensively with individuals experiencing anxiety and helped them to minimise the role it plays in their life . This is done through a process of discovery and learning tools and strategies to use outside the therapy room . I have written and delivered programs for children in schools to reduce anxiety.

My work focuses upon an holistic view of the individual and their history. This means our focus is less upon individual 'symptoms' and alleviation of these, and more upon what the 'symptom' might be communicating about imbalance in the individual. This leads on to an examination as to what needs to change at the level of body, mind, emotion and spirit.

Stress doesn’t just happen instantaneously, it is a series of events, reactions and actions, which all build on each other. Sometimes I talk to clients about a truck travelling on the highway. As the journey starts there is nothing much in the trailer, but as the journey continues, the trucker picks up various loads until the vehicle is just about carrying its maximum load and it can continue on the highway for a long time like this – travelling along with a heavy load but within the legal limit. What happens next is usually just a minor addition to the load – something tiny that in and of itself is irrelevant but is just enough to tip the scale so that the vehicle is now travelling over the recommended tonnage. Once overloaded, there is more pressure on the tyres, the truck can pick up too much speed going downhill – there are various systems that don’t work as quickly easily or effectively as they would under ‘normal’ circumstances. And this is pretty much what can happen to us. So although there can be a very major or significant event that creates a big stress load, most times, stress builds up over time. When working with clients, and in my own self work, I have found it makes change much easier to achieve, with smaller steps.
