Trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) is a treatment option that can be used in conjunction with Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) to treat trauma and PTSD. Using an eight-phase organized method, EMDR is an evidence-based therapy that assists people in processing and integrating upsetting memories. In order to aid in the reprocessing of traumatic memories and lessen their emotional impact, bilateral stimulation is frequently used in the form of guided eye movements. EMDR places more emphasis on the emotional processing of traumatic experiences than TF-CBT, which prioritizes cognitive restructuring and skill development. EMDR is a successful treatment for PTSD, anxiety, and depression because it addresses the underlying memories and beliefs related to trauma. When TF-CBT and EMDR are used together, it can offer a whole therapy plan that addresses the emotional and cognitive elements of trauma, improving overall symptoms.

Trauma and PTSD

Adrienne Figueiredo

Therapist, MA, LCAT
It has been very heartening to see that our culture has begun to more deeply realize the far-reaching impacts of trauma, and attempt to build structures to support those suffering from PTSD. That being said, there is still much cultural misunderstanding about PTSD, and many people still suffer in silence. I have deeply enjoyed working with those who are struggling with this, and consider it a strength of my practice, as it's something I've treated the entirety of my career.
