Grief is the process of reacting to a loss. This loss could be physical (death of a loved one), social (such as a divorce), or occupational (such as work-related). An individual experiencing grief may have conflicted feelings and may experience fluctuations in symptoms throughout their process. Often times, individuals might feel as though they have accepted the loss and have gotten closure. However, later on they may begin to experience grief again and that is okay. Closure is not a one-time thing, it can happen over the course of weeks, months, or even years. Sometimes we are able to gain closure on certain aspects of the loss, and other parts may take a bit longer. Individuals may find that their emotional reaction changes and fluctuates, and can entail different emotions and behaviors. Feelings of sadness can also begin to intensify as the individual begins to yearn to be with the loved one again.
Psychotherapy can be effective in helping an individual overcome grief by allowing the individual to come to terms with the loss, to help work through pain and grief, and help to learn how to move forward and adapt to a life without the loved one. Psychotherapy can also help you to find ways to maintain a connection with the loss. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy approaches have been successful in helping to treat grief and loss. Additionally, Relaxation Techniques and Mindfulness-based interventions, may also be helpful.

Grief is a normal and adaptive process, and as such, does not necessarily need treatment. However, some people feel that their feelings of grief are overwhelming. Others feel ‘stuck’ in their grief and would like to talk to someone. The focus of grief therapy is to help you to work through your feelings of grief, to feel supported, and to help you regain a sense of control, and move forward in your life in a way that feels appropriate to you.
Treatment length at MindFit depends on how a person is currently functioning, and how impairing feelings of grief are on daily activities. It may range from 6 to 16 sessions.
During treatment, members work with clincians on a number of strategies, which may include understanding the grief process and telling one’s grief story, identifying and modifying unhelpful thoughts or beliefs, carving out time to process the one’s feelings, becoming re-engaged in activities, relaxation and mindfulness strategies, assertive communication skills, self-compassion exercises, and/or identifying and working on one’s values. Our coaches can work with you on tasks that can help in the grieving process, such as writing about your grief, managing through ‘firsts,’ creating rituals or memories in honour of a loved one, etc.

Grief, loss, and bereavement, whether it is the passing of a loved one, the end of a career, or the falling apart of a relationship are all similar: we are losing or have lost an important part of our lives. Understanding the emotions, feelings, and behaviours we have when we experience grief and bereavement is part of helping us accept what has occurred, why we feel the way that we are feeling, and what is next for us. In working with clients on grief, loss, and bereavement it is important to understand that the way we process these experiences is unique to each person, and the pillar of respect is paramount.

As humans, we are all likely to experience loss or grief over the course of our lifetime. While inevitable, it is not something we are often prepared to experience and/or process when it happens. When experiencing a sense of loss or grief it is important to find support in a safe space to share your feelings, thoughts, and fears, as you navigate your life post-loss, of any kind. I am honoured to provide that space for you.

Registered Psychotherapist, Registered Psychotherapist
Grief is a deeply personal and often complex process that can encompass a wide range of emotions and experiences. At Collaborative Care Therapy, we offer a compassionate, integrative, and relational approach to grief therapy, recognizing that each person's journey through grief is unique.
In our therapy sessions, we provide a safe and empathetic environment for individuals to express and process their feelings of loss. We understand that grief can arise from various forms of loss - not just the death of a loved one, but also the loss of relationships, health, dreams, or identity. Our approach is trauma-informed, acknowledging that grief can sometimes trigger or intertwine with past traumas and emotional wounds.
Our therapists utilize a variety of therapeutic techniques to support you through your grief journey. This includes narrative therapy, which helps in reauthoring one’s life story in the wake of loss, and cognitive-behavioral therapy to address challenging thought patterns that may arise during grieving. We also incorporate mindfulness practices to help manage the intensity of emotions and foster a gentle self-awareness during this difficult time.
Our goal at Collaborative Care Therapy is to support you in navigating the grieving process in a way that honors your loss and the range of emotions you may be experiencing. We work collaboratively with you to find a path forward that respects your individual process, helping you to integrate the experience of loss into your life in a meaningful way.
