Registered Psychotherapist, Master of Human Development Counselling
Anxiety and fear is a normal function of our brain; it helps us be alert to danger, and be able to react quickly. Unfortunately, what starts off as an adaptive function, becomes maladaptive after the threat has passed. We become hyperalert to danger where it no longer exists, and we often erroneously make connections that result in innocuous stimuli triggering an anxious response. It all makes sense, but it ends up with debilitating effects on your daily functioning. I will approach this with curiousity and will help you calm anxious responses and understand yourself and your brain differently. My theoretical approach will have a foundation of attachment theory and be trauma informed. While working with anxiety, CBT strategies will be integrated, including exploring errors of thinking as well as incorporating exposure plans.

I approach anxieties and fears from an Adlerian perspective. I work to help my clients understand how they use their fears/anxieties to avoid things that they find overwhelming or difficult, or use fears/anxieties to gain control. We may use exposure therapy or CBT to reframe irrational thinking.
People often over worry and panic about situations that they perceive that they are incapable of handling them. This can cause anxiety, which affects sleep, productivity, and social interactions. Anxiety can cause physiological reactions such as shortness of breath, sweating, chest pain, dry month, lump in the throat, and rapid heart rate, etc. Therapy will be able to help you improve your mental state of mind and find different ways to cope better with your challenges calmly and more effectively.
